Controlstar Systems, the Horncastle-based manufacturer of low-cost integrated control systems, has received a grant to help fund the development of two new condition-monitoring systems

These systems that will have the capability of sending invaluable data from remote sites back to a central point using a dial-up connection, intranet or the internet The first system is for vibration monitoring and will help to predict incipient failures of rotating equipment in the field, while the second one, a power quality monitoring system - will provide a facility for analysing energy usage at remote locations

Commenting on the award, Rod Smith, managing director of Controlstar Systems, said: "Although these functions are available using expensive dedicated equipment, the objective of this development is to provide practical functionality in a cost-effective manner, where the high data content of these applications can be transmitted via dial-up connection, intranet or internet and presented to the user in an easy-to-understand form.

Both of these monitoring systems will give the user detailed insight into the operation of a remote facility and can provide the key information to trigger maintenance activities, thereby preventing substantial equipment failures".

Controlstar Systems specialises in the design engineering of systems for the control and monitoring of industrial applications.

The company areas of expertise range from oil and gas installations to water drainage systems.

The Smart Awards initiative, which is run by the Small Business Service of the Department of Trade and Industry, aims to assist small and medium-sized businesses by funding projects leading to the development of technologically innovative products and services.
