Economies in river water use at the Royal Mint

River water instead of mains water is used for the manufacturing processes at the Royal Mint at Llantrisant, thanks to the use of a Cross automatic filtration system at the river Ely extraction point

The use of river water instead of mains water for use in the manufacturing processes at the Royal Mint at Llantrisant has been helped by the use of a Cross automatic filtration system at the river Ely extraction point.

The water extraction is at some 500m distance from the Royal Mint and is pumped to an intermediary header tank from which it is fed, under gravity, to a sand filter before being pumped to various cooling and washing processes.

The installation of the Cross System 2000 filter, which is a modular system of 75 micron rating with a flow rate capacity of 2.5m3 per minute, has provided not only cleaner water but also a higher reliability than that of earlier equipment.

The Cross System 2000 is made up of individual filter pods, each containing seven stainless steel 'zero gravity' filtration coils.

Raised ridges on the coils define the filter rating which is selectable between 12 and 400 microns.

During backwashing, which is triggered automatically by time lapse or pressure differential, each coil opens evenly along its length to ensure that any filtrate is completely removed with the minimum use of backwash water.

Manifold pods help to ensure an optimum balance between flow and filtering and backwashing of the pods is performed sequentially so that flow rate through the filter is never interrupted.
