Water treatment plant saves space and energy

A C and L Industrial product story
Edited by the Processingtalk editorial team Nov 14, 2008

Galway City Council Water Treatment Plant has installed two Boge C9 screw compressors and a Boge Trinity controller to provide a quiet, space saving and energy saving compressed air system.

The Galway City Council Water and Drainage Department produces and distributes water to domestic and commercial consumers in the Galway City area and adjacent parts of the county.

At the Galway Water Treatment Plant, compressed air is used within various stages of the water works from actuating valves to powering pneumatic instrumentation.

Patsy O'Connor, the plant maintenance supervisor at the plant, was asked to investigate the rising operating and service costs of the existing compressed air system.

Although the existing compressors had served the plant well, they were beginning to age and so required regular service work.

On review, the existing compressed air supplier recommended replacing the ageing compressors with more efficient equipment.

Patsy O'Connor approached a number of local compressed air suppliers for comparative quotes.

Colum Whelan, managing director of CandL Industrial, proposed replacing the ageing compressors with Boge C9 screw compressors and recommended the installation of a Boge Trinity controller.

Whelan said: 'The C series from Boge is a very quiet screw compressor and has a small footprint, which made it ideally suited to the Galway Water Treatment Plant.

'In order to ensure the system operated energy efficiently at all times - irrespective of load/off load times - we also recommended installing a Boge Trinity multiple compressor controller to automate the system.

Boge Trinity is a modern transducer operated changeover switch designed to control up to three compressors.

The system automatically sets itself to optimise pressure cascading - only the maximum pressure (Pmax) and the minimum pressure (Pmin) need to be entered into the controller.

O'Connor was impressed with the small footprint and low sound pressure levels inherent in the C series compressors and the reduced operating costs the system could offer.

Two Boge C9 screw compressors and a Boge Trinity controller were subsequently installed.

Within the Galway Water Treatment Plant this proved to be a space saving solution, with the C9's fitting compactly into the available space.

All service components are easily accessible from one point to allow future maintenance work to be carried out in a hassle-free manner.

The C series is also noted for its very low sound pressure levels.

High performance damping and lamellar graphite casting ensure silencing producing sound levels as low as 57dB(A).

O'Connor said: 'The C9's have reduced our loading from 13.5kW (old compressors) to 7.5kW.

'Additionally, with the C9's, we should achieve significant reductions to our operating costs.

The C series is available in the standard pressure of 8, 10 and 13 bar.

Output capacities range from 0.280 - 1.2m3/min, with motor power 3kW to 7.5kW.

CandL Industrial is the exclusive authorised distributor of Boge compressed air equipment within the Republic of Ireland.
