Southern Water has awarded a three-year contract worth around GBP500k to Draeger Safety UK, Gas Detection Systems, to cover the replacement, maintenance and calibration of fixed gas detection systems

Southern Water Services Limited has awarded a three-year contract worth in the region of GBP500,000 to Draeger Safety UK, Gas Detection Systems.

Covering the replacement, maintenance and calibration of all Southern Water fixed gas detection systems, the Framework Agreement will also ensure compliance with all current legislation.

Draeger was one of four companies to bid for the contract, which was governed by EU legislation and awarded on 4 May, 2004.

John O'Dor, Senior Buyer at Southern Water explains "In looking for the most economically advantageous tender, we had to consider the implications across the entire three year term.

Having considered each tender very carefully, it was clear that Draeger offered a cost effective, total solution that combined the latest technology with minimal maintenance requirements.

We recognised that, by incorporating a complete change out of old equipment for new technology, as opposed to maintaining old equipment, Draeger was prepared to make an upfront investment, which would benefit both organisations.

There would be less system down time for us and it would reduce the need for unplanned maintenance visits by Draeger engineers.

In addition, our equipment will be in better condition at the end of the term than it was at the start.

"As part of our evaluation," he adds, "we also took into account the mechanics and logistics of the Draeger proposal and were pleased to have received presentations by service personnel as well as technical sales engineers.

It was very reassuring to meet the people that we would work with and we were impressed with both their preliminary work and their flexible approach to any changes in our requirements.

The contract has had a successful start and I am confident that we will work really well together in the future".

Incorporating the Draeger Sensor Exchange Programme, the contract includes the supply and maintenance of the new Regard 3800 controller with Polytron 3000 and Polytron 2IR sensors.

John Cohen, General Manager of Draeger GDS concludes, "We are delighted to have won this prestigious contract and are pleased to have built such an enjoyable, close working relationship with Southern Water.

By combining state-of-the-art technology with our unique Sensor Exchange Programme we are confident that both our organisations will benefit".
