Ball screws break 20,000 hour operation barrier
Danaher Motion, manufacturers of Thomson linear motion products, have designed a new form of self lubricating ball screw which has been successfully tested for over 20,000 hours continuous operation
Electro-mechanical actuation: the safe alternative
Pneumatics and hydraulics have done the job of linear actuation in a huge range of applications for years: with tougher legislation plus efficiency demands, electro-mechanical solutions are now best
Producing long screw driven linear drives presents a number of technical challenges to the design engineer.
This particular solution is ideal for applications requiring high force and low speed but all too often belt drive units are specified as long screw driven units were previously unavailable.
Screw supports have been designed by Danaher Motion to reduce the unsupported length of the screw as the maximum speed of the screw depends on the free length of the screw.
When the screw is rotating it can only withstand a certain speed at a certain length.
If this speed is exceeded the screw will begin to warp, i.e the screw has reached its critical speed for that length.
To help the specifying engineer Danaher Motion has produced some sizing and selection software that clearly predicts when screw supports are needed.
The screw supports allow the M55 a stroke of up to 3 metres, the M75 up to 4 metres and the M100 up to 6 metres.
The Linear Motion Systems division of Danaher Motion, provides standard and custom linear bearings, linear guides, ball and lead screws, gearheads, linear actuators, slides and systems, precision balls, moulded products, resolvers and feedback devices, brakes and clutches.
Its products are applied worldwide throughout a variety of motion applications in the medical, industrial, aerospace, and mobile off-highway markets.
Its highly recognised brand names include: ThomsonT, Thomson BSAT, MicronT, HaroweT and Deltran PTT.
