Leading engine manufacturer Deutz is celebrating the production of its one millionth 2011 Series diesel engine, which was first introduced in 1988

When it was first introduced back in 1988, the original 1011 engine incorporated two major innovations in the design of industrial engines As well as using the lubrication oil as the engine cooling medium, a toothed belt was used as a camshaft drive for the first time on a medium output industrial diesel engine

In 2004 the 1011F, itself a revision to the original 1011 engine, was again revised and updated, to become the 2011 engine, in order to meet the stringent exhaust emission regulations in Europe and North America.

From the first day of production the engine quickly became a best seller and the market leader in its power class.

With sales continuing to grow, the 500,000th unit rolled off the German assembly line in 2000.

Today, it is used in more than 200 different types of industrial equipment around the world, including construction and allied plant, as well as other materials handling and mobile equipment.

The original engine was available with two, three or four cylinders, featuring an integrated or conventional cooling system, with power ratings spanning 22 to 61kW.

Later improvements saw the power rating increased to 64kW.

The most recent development was the introduction earlier this year of a four-cylinder model featuring water-cooling.

This has allowed the engines to meet the new Tier 3 exhaust emissions regulations for North America and Europe, as well as increasing the maximum power output to 74.9kW.

All of this has been achieved without any change to the original engine compact overall dimensions.

The new water-cooled model is available in either naturally aspirated or turbocharged versions, with the latter incorporating charge air cooling.

Both engine types have a proven fuel injection system with a mechanical engine governor.

An optional electronic engine governor makes the engine suitable for use as part of a power train management system.

At a maximum speed of 2600 min-1 the naturally aspirated engine delivers a power output of 50kW.

The turbocharged versions deliver 68kW, which increases to 74.9kW for the charge air cooled model.

Deutz UK Managing Director, Klaus-Ulrich Klinger, said: "The production of the one millionth 2011 engine demonstrates its unrivalled popularity with industrial end-users around the world.

Reaching this important milestone has undoubtedly been helped by the high levels of sales achieved over the years in the UK".

The 2011 Series complies with European and US exhaust emission regulations as specified by EU Stage III and EPA Tier 3.

Extremely compact, 2011 models provide an outstanding power to weight ratio, together with high reliability and long maintenance intervals with low wear.

Established in 1864, Deutz is the oldest and one of the world's largest independent manufacturers of diesel and gas engines, producing more than 237,000 units annually, with a turnover approaching GBP1.5 billion Euros (2006).

It has an overall product range extending from 4kW to 4,000kW, suitable for a wide variety of markets and applications, including construction, quarrying, mining, materials handling, agricultural, groundcare and airport ground handling equipment, together with other off-highway mobile plant.

Whether mechanically or electronically controlled - air, oil or water cooled - Deutz diesel engines are amongst the world leaders from an environmental standpoint.

Their low noise and exhaust emissions, together with suitability for bio-diesel, alongside their extremely economical fuel consumption, enable users to fully optimise operating costs.

Full sales and product support is available through the new centrally located Deutz UK head office facility in Cannock, Staffordshire, supported by a dedicated nationwide team of factory trained service engineers, equipped with a fleet of mobile workshops, and a network of specialist appointed Parts Distributors.
