Digi International, the leader in Connectware, today introduced an enhanced Digi One IAP industrial device server, the industry's first truly interoperable device server featuring industrial protocol bridging.
Protocol bridging is a unique Digi technology that enables industrial Ethernet and serial protocols to transparently intercommunicate.
Modbus, Allen Bradley and ASCII devices such as Programmable Logic Controllers (PLCs), drives, bar code readers, scales, and RFID devices, can now be easily, seamlessly and cost-effectively integrated.

"Suppliers of automation systems, including PLCs and PLC peripheral devices, develop equipment that is typically incompatible with other manufacturer's technology," said Joel Young, vice president of engineering, Digi International.
"This makes networking on the factory floor difficult, time consuming and expensive.
Based on award-winning technology, the Digi One IAP now features protocol bridging enabling different vendors' automation systems to easily work together".
The Digi One IAP with protocol bridging allows Modbus (RTU/ASCII), Modbus TCP, Allen Bradley Ethernet/IP, AB Ethernet and DF1, as well as ASCII devices to seamlessly talk to each other for the first time.
The enhanced Digi One IAP also features 64 socket connections, the most in the industry, enabling communication to even more industrial devices.
Current Digi One IAP customers can upgrade firmware for a limited time free of charge via the website.
"Digi's protocol bridging is far more cost effective and easier to implement than the current practices of industrial device intercommunication," Young added.
"Other methods are far more complex, time consuming and require extensive product intelligence and re-configuration.
With the enhanced Digi One IAP device server, customers need only to connect industrial devices to the Digi One IAP, configure the device server accordingly, and the equipment will communicate.
We make the network and protocol translations transparent to the end device".
In addition to protocol conversion, the Digi One IAP also acts as a traditional device server by allowing any industrial device with a serial port to connect to the Ethernet.
It is ideal for industrial applications requiring COM ports, serial tunnelling, or where TCP/UDP Socket functionality is necessary for critical device management and monitoring.
The Digi One IAP is also the only available device server that features flexible pass-through port functionality.
The pass-through port is an additional COM port that enables users to connect serial devices locally to a PLC without interrupting the existing PLC-to-Ethernet connection.
Digi will host a free Webinar on Tuesday, Nov 30th, 1000 CST, at www.digi.com/iapwebinar2/, to demonstrate the unique features of the enhanced Digi One IAP industrial device server.
