Nick Denbow, Editor, writes:

It was evident, from the Exhibitor profile at TOTAL, where the major investment and expenditure seems to be in the UK Processing Industry at the moment: firstly into packaging plant, and then into stainless steel vessels and cleaning equipment to meet the regulatory requirements spreading across from pharmaceuticals into food.

Rather than processing machinery or instruments, the majority of stands seemed to be presenting tanks and vessels in stainless steel, such as those from Global Stainless, and Kent Process Technologies from Ireland. With their explosive growth in pharmaceutical production plants, Ireland has created many successful equipment and hygienic system design suppliers, and the visitor interest in the Kent capability was not unaffected by the free Guinness available.

Newson Gale had a different angle, with portable and mobile pressure vessels for transporting liquids safely, and also accessories for bonding and grounding tanks according to ATEX requirements, to avoid static hazards. ATEX was the major talking point on the Rietschle Thomas stand, in relation to vacuum pumps and compressors.

With all the sterile equipment sitting there, it was good to see some real visible product movement on the Flux Pumps stand, with fluorescent orange sticky liquids being sucked out of barrels to be discharged in slow motion waterfalls! Real measurement and control products were in evidence from Malvern Instruments, featuring their Bohlin rheology product range, again on viscous liquids; Bronkhorst gas and liquid mass flow controllers; and the ever cheerful Dwyer Instruments people brought their massive range.

The next newsletter will look at other suppliers at TOTAL: but the real closing delight of the visit for me was to find a steam trap supplier, Gardner Energy Management, in the middle of all these apparently high tech stands. Not only was this a stainless steel, highly polished, no moving parts steam trap, it was just as high tech and novel as the equipment around it. With an impressive array of enthusiastic testimonials from happy energy managers and plant engineers, GEM also have not forgotten the basics of marketing a new product into a well established application, and are worth a closer look: particularly if you have the CCLevy to consider.

I hope you find this issue of our newsletter useful. In addition to
the new products, news and ideas featured here, there are hundreds more on
our website and a dozen or more being added daily, so do take a look if you can.
Alternatively, the full stories behind all the summaries and headlines in
this newsletter can be retrieved by email alone: see details below.

In the meantime, if you have any suggestions as to how we might make the
Processingtalk website or the newsletter better, email me directly.

Best wishes

[6] MANUFACTURING EXCELLENCE CONFERENCE TO BE IN JUNE
(Manufacturing Excellence, 22 March 2004)

This year's Manufacturing Excellence, the process industry conference on the benefits of automation and asset management, will be held from 15-17 June. Last year, two conferences were held, one in Teesside and another in Cork, Ireland: this year the venue will be near Birmingham, allowing easier access from both UK and Europe. The Manufacturing Excellence conference brings together experienced engineers and plant managers from the process industries, their contractors and suppliers, to learn, share best practice, and network with colleagues in the industry. Driving costs down and improving performance is essential year on year, and the conference will show how this has been achieved, using modern automation and asset management techniques.

[7] BUNKER BLENDER SYSTEM FUELS REFINERY UPGRADE
(Jiskoot Autocontrol, 2 April 2004)

A Jiskoot Bunker Blender system is at the heart of an investment programme to upgrade operational capabilities at the Eg3 Refinery near Puerto Galvan, Argentina, by its new owner Petrobras Energia. Jiskoot is also supplying sampling systems for the marine and pipeline reception points. The blender will produce bunker fuels on demand by using a Jiskoot Insight controller housed in a safe area control room near the marine fuels dock. The operator simply enters the required volume and viscosity or selects a stored 'recipe' on a touch sensitive screen. This system automatically meters, blends, analyses, corrects and loads the exact viscosity mixture. The system slows down gradually when the pre-established volume is almost complete before closing down and generating a dispatch report.
