Nick Denbow, Editor, writes:

Summer has arrived! At least in the UK it arrived this last weekend.
To welcome this, we have some stories about air conditioning for
people in factories, and cooling systems for electronics racks. Plus
a FREE Prize Draw from Vega on Processingtalk, to win a cool
water-park day out for the family at Thorpe Park, where the water
splash is made effective, memorable and photogenic with the help of
VegaBar water level control: see the Top Ten stories below.

In the UK, maybe the City Banks have air-conditioned offices, but
there are few in the manufacturing industries that I know. The
opposite is true in Japan, and an enormous amount of power is used by
air conditioners: this is now a significant target for greenhouse gas
reduction efforts. The Government has specified that all public and
private offices are to move their air-conditioner set points up, to
28C, in an attempt to save energy and reduce the Japanese output of
global warming gases. This is still swelteringly hot by UK comfort
standards, but the second problem is to persuade the Japanese
businessman to doff the dark jacket with collar and tie. The
Government has decreed that between June and September officials
should work in light clothes when possible. Mr Okuda, the well
respected Chairman of Toyota, and leader of the Japanese Business
Federation, has appeared in fashion shows with his Toyota executives,
to encourage the introduction of more casual office clothes, with no
ties. It is still going to be a long hot Summer, in Japan!

I do not know if the US Government is trying to save energy in the
same way: but Phil LaRocco of the non-profit company E+Co in
Bloomfield (NJ) is trying to bring simple green electricity to the
underdeveloped 33% of the World population who do not have it, using
simple solar photovoltaic panels. Since its creation in 1994 E+Co has
helped set up 120 businesses in 35 countries: these companies have
enabled nearly two million people to get simple electricity supplies.

[1] JOIN VEGA AND MAKE A SPLASH AT THORPE PARK!
(Vega Controls UK, 16 Jun 2005)

Most level instruments Vega supply are used in factories and
processing plants, working reliably, out of sight. The Thorpe Park
"Loggers Leap" is one of it's best known attractions and still has
the tallest drop in the UK for a water flume ride. It was made famous
by pictures of a 'soaked' Princess Diana and her sons, who regularly
visited Thorpe Park. Vega hydrostatic sensors 'VegaBar' have been in
operation on this important application since the park opened in
1990. The units work accurately over a span of only 3inches/75mm,
making sure guests at Park the water park enjoy every moment of their
flume ride. Now you can try it for yourself this summer! Vega,
Processingtalk and Thorpe Park are offering a family of 4 an entrance
ticket plus overnight family accommodation in a FREE Prize Draw.

[2] BREEZAIR COOLS THE EMPLOYEE ENVIRONMENT
(Seeley International Europe, 20 Jun 2005)

The installation of the Breezair Evaporative Cooling System on a new
production line at the Kingspan Insulation factory in Pembridge,
Herefordshire has reduced summer temperatures from a sweltering 30C,
at the upper levels of the factory, to a more comfortable 20 - 22C at
floor level. Spectrum Air Systems has roof-mounted ten TBA Breezair
units, which are supported on a simple roof upstand, connected to the
roof Z-purlins via a supporting H-frame. Installed around the factory
to provide localised spot cooling to the production line operators,
the units have introduced filtered air up to 6C below ambient. They
have provided the operators with a cooler working environment and the
benefit of humidified air, which provides a fresh feeling in the
otherwise airless environment.

[3] SHOCKWAVE TECHNOLOGY HELPS SOFT DRINKS MIXING
(Pursuit Dynamics, 16 Jun 2005)

The Pursuit Dynamics patented PDX technology is delivering dramatic
process improvements and energy savings to companies that use
thickening agents and stabilisers in the production of soft drinks.
Dissolving these powdered ingredients is often problematic. For
example, they can be slow to hydrate, often requiring the base liquid
to be heated which therefore consumes valuable process time and
energy. Pursuit Dynamics offers its PDX shockwave technology that
pumps, mixes, entrains and heats, all in one easy-to-clean process
that has no moving parts. Several ingredients can be simultaneously
wetted and hydrated thereby eliminating the need for pre-mixing.

[4] THERMAL IMAGER FOR PREDICTIVE MAINTENANCE
(Fluke (UK), 20 Jun 2005)

The new Fluke Ti30 Thermal Imager is specifically intended for
infrared preventive and predictive maintenance at industrial and
large commercial property sites. Infrared thermography is invaluable
to any maintenance programme because a radiometric, thermal image
shows absolute temperatures across a full, two-dimensional picture,
making problem identification faster and more effective than with a
spot thermometer or other measuring device. The rugged, portable
Fluke Ti30 thermal imager is very straightforward to use, allowing
maintenance organisations to conduct periodic equipment inspections
on their own schedule using in-house staff familiar with the facility
and potential trouble spots.

[5] WIDE RANGE MASS FLOWMETER IS ATEX APPROVED
(Bronkhorst , 20 Jun 2005)

Bronkhorst have announced that their Cori-Flow liquid and gas mass
flow meter is now ATEX approved for use in hazardous areas. The
Cori-Flow uses the Coriolis flow measurement principle, making the
measurement independent of fluid properties such as viscosity,
density or conductivity: it is available in sizes that cover
measurements significantly below 20 grams/hour up to 600Kg/hr. The
ultra low flow capability enables the Cori-Flow to be operated in
very low flow applications such as dosing and blending or on pilot
plants. All the Bronkhorst mass flow measurement and control systems
will be on display at the 7th World Congress of Chemical Engineering
in Glasgow (10th - 14th July).

[6] LOW FLOW METERS EXPAND CORIOLIS MEASUREMENT RANGE
(Emerson Process Management, 16 Jun 2005)

Emerson Process Management has expanded the Coriolis range with the
new Micro Motion LF-Series, a mass flowmeter family designed for low
flow applications. The LF-Series deliver precise mass, volume,
temperature, and density measurement for liquids and gases in a flow
range extending from 1 g/hr up to 28 kg/hr. With easy installation in
small flow lines, and a small footprint (100 x 150mm), the LF-Series
is the ideal solution for precise measurement and dosing of catalyst
feeds, flavours, fragrances and tints in process applications, and
for research or pilot plant scaled processes.

[7] pH/CONDUCTIVITY TRANSMITTER PROVIDES SIMPLICITY
(Endress+Hauser, 15 Jun 2005)

Life is complicated enough without technology adding to the
day-to-day complexity of your plant. That's why Endress+Hauser
Liquiline M is a pH/conductivity transmitter with a guiding
philosophy at its heart: to make life simpler. Why should dials be
difficult to see? Why shouldn't an instrument be its own technical
manual? The Liquiline M addresses both questions, with a large plain
text display that shows the measured value in sensibly-sized figures
22mm high. It is also easy to use, thanks to its new Navigator button
- a twisting dial complete with an integrated 'enter' key. The
Navigator takes you through parameter setting, servicing, diagnosis
and predictive maintenance, with plain text format replacing bulky
manuals.
