They are also looking for a waste management company to develop new and existing ideas for reducing the quantity of material sent to landfill.
Prior to ISO14000 the company already had certified quality standards and a basic environmental management in place at its Hull site, including such practises as the segregation of metal and cardboard from the general waste streams.
However these systems were not formalised and there were no means of dealing with problems or ideas for improvement.
So Quality Manager Ian Metcalfe created a special Environmental Improvement Team and set about attaining ISO14000.
This meant a formalisation of practise and improvements, starting with an initial process of checking the company's compliance to all applicable environmental legislation and drawing up an action plan to ensure that all failures were corrected.
Business operations were also investigated to assess how they interact with and affect the environment.
Mr Metcalfe said: "We have thoroughly examined the impact of all processes on the environment and discovered that the main area where improvement was needed was from waste material and energy used.
Ongoing targets have been set for their reduction, and for an increase in the quantity of material reused and recycled, and a reduction of copy paper used.
An environmental policy has been created to reflect these concerns.
Meanwhile the Environmental Improvement Team, made up of employees from all areas of the business, has retrained our entire staff in their requirements under ISO14000.
It took 12 months to implement and we are constantly striving to make further improvements.
As a result we believe that Donaldson Membranes has not only become a more environmentally friendly company but a more efficient one as well".
