By replacing electrostatic precipitators (ESP) with specially designed high temperature bag filters for the dedusting of cement kilns, cement efficiency and production is being improved in Spain

The cement industry is one of Spain's most significant manufacturing markets and enjoys steady growth and development A recent report in El Pais reported that Spanish cement consumption was up 2.9% in the first 4 months of 2007 compared to the same period last year, reaching 18.4 million tonnes

55.7 million tonnes of cement were consumed during 2006, making Spain the highest user of cement in the European Union and 5th in the world, following China, India, USA and Japan.

Demand for cement is high in Spain, due to the increasing levels of building activity, in both the public and private sectors.

Reducing energy consumption and environmental emissions are two of the most important and greatest challenges facing the cement industry today and with such a buoyant market, Spanish cement companies are continually looking to improve their environmental performance.

One such improvement is the replacement of electrostatic precipitators (ESP) with bag filters for the dedusting of cement kilns, a practice which requires the expertise of bag manufacturers such as SATI, a company with more than 45 years of experience serving the Spanish cement industry and other industrial sectors.

During the last year SATI has supplied local cement companies with over 10,000 filter bags made with Donaldson Membranes Tetratex 6255 Woven Glass fabric, with the Ultra High Efficiency ePTFE membrane, a media designed specifically to provide optimum performance for the most demanding of applications whilst being suitable for continuous operation at temperatures of up to 260C.

Offering the benefit of a reduced bag cleaning regime, both in terms of compressed air pressure and frequency of clean, Tetratex 6255 can also provide near-zero particulate emissions, extended bag life, consistently lower filter pressure drop and reduced maintenance costs.

As a long-serving supplier to the cement market and with a wealth of knowledge and expertise in providing filtration solutions spanning 85 years, Donaldson Membranes develop their products in close co-operation with their customers in order to meet the most exacting specifications.

In this respect, their work with SATI has been extremely successful.

Donaldson Membranes Sales Manager for Iberia, Jordi Ezquerro, said: "Our successful projects with SATI stand testimony to the superb results achieved using our media in the cement market in general, and specifically in Spain.

Tetratex ePTFE membranes are used in many parts of the cement process, giving improved airflow, which often translates into increased production rates.

Tetratex ePTFE membranes have become a significant market player as the fabric and technology of choice in the replacement of ESP with bag filters in the kiln dedusting process".

Donaldson Membranes can help to provide filtration solutions in applications for: raw mills, kilns, coal mills, alkali bypass, clinker coolers, finish mills together with those on venting and conveying processes.

Numerous ESP replacement projects are on-going throughout Europe and many of those plants now operating with bag filters have subsequently experienced decreased particulate emissions from their kiln processes following the employment of filter bags manufactured from Tetratex ePTFE membrane filter media.

In one such case the use of Tetratex filter media has produced excellent results following extensive process modifications.

This involved shutting down a wet process kiln and carrying out an overhaul of the dry process production line.

For the dry line, two large fabric filters were installed to dedust kiln gases for which Donaldson Membranes Tetratex 6255 Woven Glass media was again selected.

Prior to the overhaul the dry process production line had a capacity of 3400 tonnes of clinker per day.

Today the kiln is generally operating at a capacity of between 4400 and 4600 tonnes per day.

The full range of Tetratex ePTFE membrane media includes: Tetratex Release; Tetratex; Tetratex High Efficiency; and Tetratex Ultra High Efficiency.
