Davy's novel process technology is for the conversion of ethanol to ethyl acetate which is an important non-toxic and environmentally friendly industrial solvent.
The new process is an outstanding example of how in a period of less than five years a conceptual chemical route can be demonstrated in the laboratory, tested at bench scale and proved in a mini-plant before the construction of the first 50,000 mtpa plant in Secunda, South Africa using synthetic ethanol as feedstock.
This plant has been in operation since 2001.
The recent licence agreement with Haihua is for a process which will use bio-ethanol as the sole feedstock.
This is a truly green process because bio-ethanol is a renewable resource and, after its use as a solvent, ethyl acetate degrades to carbon dioxide and water.
In September, Davy Process Technology was presented with the 2005 Crystal Faraday Award for Green Technology.
This prestigious award is for the development of process technologies or products that are innovative and have minimal environmental impact as well as being demonstrated at industrial scale.
The new ethyl acetate process technology is available for license to allow current producers of ethanol, or of biomass that can be fermented to ethanol, to add value to their product slate.
This proprietary technology has minimal environmental impact and the process is simple as well as molecularly efficient in carbon, hydrogen and energy conversion.
Davy Process Technology has a global business in chemicals technology development and technology licensing.
The company has its headquarters in London, a company in Switzerland and a Technology Centre in Stockton-on-Tees.
It owns a range of proprietary process technologies such as Methanol, Gas Conversion Technologies, Butanediol, Natural and Synthetic Detergent Alcohols, Oxo Alcohols, Industrial Amines, Ethyl Acetate and Fertilisers.
