New water supply system will use MIEX

An Earth Tech product story
Edited by the Processingtalk editorial team Oct 31, 2007

Global engineering firm Earth Tech Morrison has clinched a GBP5M contract from Yorkshire Water to upgrade the Albert Water Treatment Works, supplying Halifax in West Yorkshire

The Albert Water Treatment Works supplies 55 million litres of water a day to 195,400 people in Halifax and the surrounding Calderdale area.

The Earth Tech improvements will mean that the water supply will be guaranteed for the next 20 years and the quality will be vastly superior.

By introducing a new MIEX system, (Magnetic ion exchange), Earth Tech will increase efficiency and lower operating costs.

The system works by filtering moor water, to remove the manganese and reduce the colour and organic compounds, all before distribution into the local water supply.

Ian Jones, operations director of Earth Tech Morrison explained: "Water treatment works of a certain age are not as efficient as they used to be, with many experiencing a slow increase in colour levels.

The location of the works is a challenge in itself.

Originally built in the 1980s, the works are located within a built-up area, with residential areas and allotments close by.

We know how restricted we are by the lack of additional building space, so we have created a design based on utilising the existing car-park.

Here we can construct the additional plant to treat our rising water processing demands using the MIEX systems.

"This will be the first installation of MIEX in Europe, as it has been successfully trialled during water treatment applications in Australia, New Zealand and the USA".

Tony White, managing director of Earth Tech, says: "Local communities will benefit directly from a more efficient, reliable and ecologically sound water treatment service.

We have a long and successful history working with Yorkshire Water and are delighted to have won this contract.

The scheme is scheduled to start this month and aims to complete by November 2008".
