The new EEDA funding will enable EESCN to continue to offer a wide range of services to the regional stem cell community.
These services include brokering relationships between representatives from the academic, clinical, financial, biopharmaceutical, technical and business/professional communities.
EESCN will also continue to provide expert analysis of policy issues in the stem cell research field, as well as promoting the region's strengths in stem cells to an international audience.
EESCN is planning a busy calendar of events and activities that includes a series of inter-disciplinary workshops aimed at encouraging scientists to develop technologies that will help stem cell researchers overcome some of the challenges they currently face.
EESCN will also be hosting events for the general public, the first of which, 'The Stem Cell Dream', will be held in Cambridge on 29 January 2008.
Other activities range from the hosting of regional networking events to exhibiting at international conferences and exhibitions.
In addition to publishing regular newsletters, EESCN will also play a key role in organising both inbound and outbound missions aimed at promoting collaborations with overseas scientists in academia and industry.
Mark Wathen, EEDA programme manager for life sciences and healthcare, said: "The East of England has a key part to play in stem cells and regenerative medicine.
Ensuring our life science companies are well placed within the global market place could have a significant impact on the region's future growth and prosperity.
It is particularly important that the region harnesses its assets, talents and experience to exploit the growth potential and remains a leading player in this global field.
Continued support to EESCN is vital to ensure the East of England remains a leading knowledge-based economy.
To ensure the region is capable of competing with the top regions internationally, will rely on the continued development of its strong regional research base and effective links between business and research in new fields, priority sectors and business clusters".
EESCN chairman, Dr Mary Archer said: "EESCN has a successful three-year track record in the running of the region's stem cell network and I am delighted that EEDA is continuing to support our activities.
With EEDA backing, I have no doubt that EESCN will make a significant contribution to the success of the regional stem cell sector in the next two years".
EEDA is providing funding to EESCN for two years, after which the network will become self sustaining.
