Derbyshire Education Business Partnership are looking for regional engineering businesses to offer work placements to students taking part in Derbyshire's successful Young Apprenticeship programme

Derbyshire Education Business Partnership (DEBP) are looking for regional engineering businesses to offer work placements to students taking part in Derbyshire's successful Young Apprenticeship programme The Young Apprenticeship programme for 14-16 year olds was introduced nationally in 2004 by the Learning and Skills Council to help address the skills shortages in certain sectors

Derbyshire submitted a bid to pilot the Young Apprenticeship in Engineering and the first group of 32 young people started in September 2004.

Students study GCSEs for four days per week and spend one day with a local training provider developing the skills and knowledge to gain a nationally recognised engineering qualification.

Both NLT Training Services and Rolls-Royce Community Training have been involved in delivering high quality practical training to the Young Apprenticeship students over the last two years.

Students on the programme also spend 50 days over the two years on work placements with local engineering employers.

This is invaluable for the young people, providing them with an opportunity to demonstrate their practical experience and technical knowledge in a real industrial setting.

It also gives employers with the unique opportunity to identify talented young people for their business and shape the workforce of the future.

The first group of 32 students from five schools (Frederick Gent, Selston Arts and Community College, Mortimer Wilson, Swanwick Hall and Tibshelf Community) have now just completed the course with some amazing results.

Between them the students gained 74 unit credits and 68 unit distinctions in their level 2 engineering qualifications.

Over half the students have now secured and started full apprenticeships with local engineering companies, including: Imperial Tobacco, Preconomy, R and D Tool and Engineering , Rolls-Royce, A C Engineering, Collis Engineering, Bulwell Precision Engineering, Summerfield Engineering, Foxwood Diesel, Pektron Electronics and BBT Thermotechnology UK .

Many of the employment offers were extended to the students following successful work placements with the companies.

Now in its third year, 34 students from over 50 applicants have been selected for the programme after attending a taster session and completing an aptitude test and formal interview.

We would love to hear from any engineering companies that might be interested in offering work placements.
