Top student engineers earn a grand
scholarship
The University of Bradford is handing out scholarships worth GBP1,000 each to 27 of its high-flying first year engineering students, aided by the Jowett Scholarships, in memorial to Jowett Automobiles
The University of Bradford is handing out scholarships worth GBP1,000 each to 27 of its high-flying first year engineering students A special ceremony is being held in the University School of Engineering, Design and Technology on Friday 23 March 2007 for all the students who have all scored an average of 70 per cent or above in their first year studies so far

Twenty of the scholarships are funded entirely by the University, with the other seven being awarded as part of the annual Benjamin Jowett Scholarship scheme for the Mechanical and Automotive Engineering, and the Automotive Design Technology degree courses.
Professor Andrew Day, Dean of the School of Engineering, Design and Technology, said: "I have been delighted at the exceptional performance of so many of our students across the School which has resulted in the award of these scholarships.
All 27 students performed at First Class Honours level in their first semester examinations.
I congratulate them and many other first year students who have worked hard to produce excellent results.
If this standard of academic performance continues through to graduation we will have produced some potentially world class engineers".
The Jowett Scholarships were set up in 1999 by the surviving descendants of Benjamin Jowett, who, with his brother William, set up the Jowett automobile manufacturing business in Bradford in 1910.
John Illingworth, grandson of Benjamin Jowett, said: "My family felt that encouraging young engineers at the University of Bradford was an ideal form of commemoration.
Since setting up the scholarships, we have formed a close relationship with the University School of Engineering, Design and Technology, taking a keen interest in the annual scholarship awarding process".
Students receiving the scholarships are currently in their first year of the following courses: Civil and Structural Engineering; Electrical and Electronic Engineering; Electronic, Telecommunications and Internet Engineering; Engineering and Management; Mechanical and Automotive Engineering; Mechanical Engineering; Medical Engineering; Technology Management Design.
