Homogeniser suits viscous mixing applications

An Ekato Process Technology product story
Edited by the Processingtalk editorial team Jul 2, 2009

Ekato has announced that its S-Jet homogeniser delivers energy reduction and process time improvements for batch mixing.

The company said the technology is ideal for all viscous mixing applications, including cosmetics, paints and food.

The approach adds one of the product phases at a low temperature into a hot mix.

Until now this hot/cold mixing methodology has not been practical for most commercial applications as waxing has been a major problem.

Waxing is the local solidifying of the oil phase when mixed with a cooler input.

Ekato's S-Jet design has now overcome this, cutting both the energy used to heat one of the product inputs and reducing cooling times by as much as 50 per cent (or four hours for a 5,000-litre vessel).

The benefits are easy to see; less heating means less energy consumption and quicker cooling.

The S-Jet homogeniser is designed specifically to mix, emulsify and disperse hot/cold inputs (including fluids and solids) into vacuum-based mixing vessels at high flow rates.

The rotor and stator design ensures the tight particle size distributions needed for high-quality products are met.

S-Jet systems can also reduce homogenisation times by up to 50 per cent, further helping increase throughput and deliver rapid capital payback.

Production units range in size from 50 litres to 10,000 litres, with lab systems starting at three litres.

When combined with Ekato's Paravisc impeller, the company said more benefits can be enjoyed by the user.

The Paravisc induces fluid flow upwards at the vessel wall with fluid returning down the centre axis of the shaft, feeding directly into the S-Jet homogeniser inlet.

The product then returns into the batch, in an upward direction, at the side wall of the vessel, picking up newly homogenised mass and increasing mixing efficiency.

Ekato can also offer complete custom design, pilot plant testing and reliable scale-up to commercial dimensions.
