Pressure bursting panel range is ATEX-approved
Pressure-safety systems provider Elfab has received ATEX approval for its entire range of bursting panels, to protect low-pressure ducting systems against damage caused by gas or dust explosions
Pressure-safety systems provider Elfab has recently received ATEX approval for its entire range of bursting panels.
Elfab panels are now certified as meeting the requirements of the European Directive 94/9/EC and will protect low-pressure ducting systems against damage caused by gas or dust explosions.
Dispersed powders present a particular explosion hazard, since their high surface area allows them to burn very rapidly.
The Health and Safety Executive recently published updated guidance aimed at industries dealing with combustible dusts, including sectors that handle animal feed, sawdust, organic chemicals, plastics, metal powders and coal.
While it is desirable to prevent ignition of such powders, suitable measures to mitigate the potential effects of an explosion should also be implemented.
In its new document, the HSE suggests that "explosion relief venting" should be one of the main protection measures adopted, and bursting panels represent one of the most common methods of satisfying this recommendation.
Panels deliver instant pressure relief through rapid and controlled exhaust venting.
ATEX accreditation was achieved after testing and approval were confirmed by a notified third party.
To demonstrate safe opening, a series of tests was undertaken in which an explosive gas mixture was ignited.
Panels were inspected for full opening and to verify that no fragmentation had occurred.
Elfab bursting panels are fail-safe, leak-tight, maintenance-free and available in a variety of shapes and sizes (e.g circular, rectangular, trapezoidal).
They are designed to open at a set pressure, ranging from 20 to 500 mbarg, and are constructed from either 304 or 316 stainless steel.
Panels can be supplied pre-domed to protect against pressure fluctuations or with vacuum support where applicable.
Versions for specialised applications are available upon request.
