Upgrading possible for old DCS systems.

New connection, control and display migration products from Emerson permit the easy and rapid conversion from older generation automation systems to the new PlantWeb digital plant architecture.

New connection, control and display migration products permit the easy and rapid conversion from older generation automation systems to the new PlantWeb digital plant architecture Emerson Process Management has developed new connection, control and display migration products that permit the easy and rapid conversion from older generation automation systems to the new PlantWeb digital plant architecture

A recent study has found that the use of outdated automation systems is preventing many manufacturers around the world from achieving efficiency and productivity benefits possible from newer technologies.

To facilitate easy, fast and convenient conversion of the legacy systems, new Emerson products and services enable migration from competitive systems to the DeltaV digital automation system within PlantWeb architecture.

Migration is supported for competitive systems including: ABB (Bailey) INFI90 and NET90; Honeywell TDC3000 and TDC2000; GSE D/3; Foxboro (Invensys) SPEC200, Spectrum and I/A; Siemens Teleperm; Siemens Moore APACS; ABB (Taylor) MOD300; Yokogawa; GE Genius I/O; Allen-Bradley 1771 Remote I/O; and Modicon S908, Quantum 800 Series I/O.

Tembec, a leading integrated $3.5 billion Canadian forest products company, with over 50 manufacturing sites in the United States and Canada, provides an example of speedy transition.

"We were able to migrate over 1000 instrument signals from our existing Bailey system to a DeltaV system in just one hour", said Denny Efferson, process control engineer at Tembec Paper.

"We had a paper mill turnaround, and needed to take our boiler house down and get it back up in a very short period of time.

We engineered the DeltaV system, and prewired it to a serial termination cable.

To change over, all we had to do was unplug the existing cables to our I/O and plug in the DeltaV system.

We commissioned all the points and had the system back on line in about an hour".

The new Emerson migration products for field connection, control and operator interface, combined with its simulation and training services, help minimise process downtime for transition.

Pre-engineered field connection products reduce costs as much as 50% compared with rewiring costs, and process downtime can be reduced by 75%.

Predefined drag and drop display dynamics such as pumps, valves and motors enable easy building of new displays: services and conversion tools are available to convert existing graphics.

Off-line simulation enables configuration checkout and operator training prior to connecting the new, modern digital plant architecture.

"We understand the pressures on manufacturers to increase returns despite difficult economic times", said John Berra, Executive Vice President of Emerson who heads up their process management business.

"We also realise that making the transition from older systems hasn't always been easy.

We've put in place the products and services to allow manufacturers to achieve new levels of performance with minimum transition efforts".

Conversion to Emerson PlantWeb digital plant architecture enables manufacturers to achieve up to 30% capital and engineering savings, and on-going 2% gains in operating efficiency.

Factors like a 40% increase in maintenance efficiency contribute to the overall operating efficiency improvement.

More than 1600 plants around the world now use PlantWeb with Foundation fieldbus technology. Request a free brochure from Emerson Process Management ...
