New measurement approach brings benefits

The Emerson investment in digital, advanced electronic technology has delivered the Rosemount 3051S Series of instrumentation and associated primary elements for level, flow and pressure measurement

Converting conventional 4-20mA process loops to this powerful next generation measurement platform for level, flow or pressure enables a dramatic impact on established practices in design and procurement, in installation and commissioning, and in the operation of maintenance and spares inventories In addition, the 3051S is a broad family of intelligent field devices that power PlantWeb digital plant architecture, providing the leading approach to gathering and delivering plant process data, and applying this data to achieve the true potential of manufacturing operations

An example of the benefits of the 3051S series comes from the predictive capabilities available.

The new series supports the diagnostics available via PlantWeb architecture, including the AMS Plugged Line Diagnostics Snap-On application.

Traditional DP flow installations consist of a remote mount transmitter with impulse lines connected to the primary element.

This type of installation is driven by the need to have access to the transmitter for recalibration, zeroing and regular inspections.

However, long impulse lines are prone to plugging, and can introduce potential leak paths and zero shifts, caused for example by condensate build-up in gas lines.

For these types of installations, the plugged line diagnostics of the 3051S alerts the operator to problems with the impulse lines.

The increased stability, reliability and enhanced diagnostics of the 3051S allow "best practice" to be applied to this traditional DP flow installation.

The SuperModule, the pressure sensor module from the 3051S, can be directly mounted onto the primary measurement element to significantly reduce the potential for leaking joints and blocked or frozen lines.

The digital technology of the 3051S enables use of the remote operator interface in such instances, to provide a visual display, or to make the electronics output module accessible at a different walkway level, remote from the process.

"Best practice" can also be applied to primary elements.

Due to the increased performance and rangeability of the 3051S, the bore size of an orifice plate can be selected to reduce the permanent pressure loss, whilst still covering the operating flow range.

A new Rosemount 405P compact orifice plate has been designed to expand and strengthen the "best practices" enabled by the new series.

An integral three-valve manifold on the orifice plate and carrier reduces leak paths and allows the coplanar diaphragms to be mounted directly onto the primary element.

Also a centring ring, for use between ANSI or DIN flanges, allows accurate positioning of the plate to better than 30thou, essential to ensure compliance with orifice plate installation standards, and for accurate measurement.

For larger line sizes insertion style primary elements are recommended and the Emerson Annubar continues to be the market leader in averaging pitot tubes.

Supporting a full breadth of applications, all Rosemount primary flow measurement elements can be assembled to the 3051S, in the factory, under clean conditions.

As a result, the complete flowmeter is delivered factory calibrated, pressure and leak tested, ready for plant installation and service. Request a free brochure from Emerson Process Management ...
