Emerson Process Management has helped Feedback Instruments deliver customised technical training rigs for gas and oil field processes used in the Gulf, for a new technical college based in Qatar

Emerson Process Management has taken a key role in helping Feedback Instruments of Crowborough, East Sussex, deliver customised technical training for gas and oil field processes used in the Gulf, for a new technical college based in Qatar, established with sponsorship from the Emir, HE Sheikh Abdullah Bin Saud Al Thani.

Feedback Instruments has a worldwide reputation for student training systems, used in colleges, universities and in apprentice training schools in many industries; included are process training systems to simulate liquid transfer systems, heating systems, pH control loops and pressurised systems.

Feedback Instruments won a major contract for the supply of technical teaching aids, with full documentation, to enable CNA-Q, the College of the North Atlantic - Qatar to establish a new oilfield technician training course within a year.

The challenge of the contract was to combine and enhance existing designs into more complex training systems using typical oilfield equipment that would simulate the gas and oil field processes used in the Gulf, for the new technical college based in Qatar.

An Emerson UK distributor, North Downs Instruments, part of the MJWilson Group, led the Emerson response to the contract.

North Downs Instruments were able to define the different styles of Rosemount pressure, temperature and flow transmitters, and the Fisher valves to be used in these training rigs.

North Downs and Emerson staff assisted in specifying and sizing the valves and actuators to work in the small bore pipework used, yet be representative of the equipment the technicians would be likely to use in their local plants.

Six of the training rigs use conventional 4-20mA communications, with superimposed HART digital communications, but a further three rigs were specified with Foundation fieldbus digital communications.

The experiments and teaching schedules developed used the Emerson 375 digital hand held communicator to set up the necessary calibrations and control loop operation within the fieldbus systems.

Further transmitters and control valves were supplied as open modules, enabling students to dismantle them to see the components, and to experience the procedures for replacement of consumable parts and spare modules.

The equipment was delivered for the start of the academic year, fully commissioned on site in Qatar by staff from Feedback Instruments, and inspected on an opening day visit by the Emir and the College Steering Committee.
