Variable speed drives for low power applications

An Emotron product story
Edited by the Processingtalk editorial team Apr 17, 2007

The Emotron VSA/VSC compact variable speed drives have been developed for low power applications, equipped with advanced functions for pumps, fans, compressors, mixers and cranes

The Emotron VSA/VSC compact series is suitable for motors of 0.18 - 7.5kW, and completes the Emotron range which now covers motor powers of 0.18 - 1,500kW.

The Emotron VSA/VSC, displayed at the Hannover Messe 2007, offers efficient yet protective starts and stops, minimizing mechanical stress and cycle times.

Controlled stops of pumps eliminate the risk of water hammer and other damage, without the need for expensive motor-controlled valves.

A mixer filled with material is easily started using torque boost.

Quick and precise stops without mechanical brakes are also ensured.

Reliable Operation.

Emotron VSA/VSC continuously adapts motor speed to the level required.

This brings considerable energy savings compared to throttling valves or dampers.

A built-in sleep function helps to further savings by pausing the motor when it does not need to be run in order to keep up the required pressure.

A low voltage over-ride function protects the process from interruptions due to momentary main power supply failure.

The motor is automatically restarted after safety stops, without manual intervention.

Emotron VSA has a built-in shaft power monitor which prevents damage and downtime.

Over or underload situations are immediately detected - if a fan filter is blocked or a pump is running dry.

Overheating, momentary power loss or a locked rotor are other situations that initiate a warning or a safety stop.

Flexible speed control.

Different load types are efficiently handled, using for example constant torque for cranes and mixers and square torque for pumps and fans.

Eight programmable pre-set speeds mean the operator can easily select the correct speed, for example to handle material with different viscosity in a mixing application.

By setting different speed ranges to be skipped, equipment damage can be reduced and maintenance costs saved.

For example, vibrations in fan applications can be avoided by quickly passing known resonance frequencies.

Double speed ramps can be set to prevent friction in pump applications.

The compact units are easily fitted into cabinets using DIN-rail or screw installation.

Further space is saved through side-by-side installation.

The control panel can be mounted externally on a cabinet front or control stand.

An EMC filter minimises the cost of and space required for installation.

Emotron VSA/VSC can be supplied with a module for serial communication via RS232, RS485 and Modbus, or for communication via Profibus.

A copy unit is available for easy transfer of settings between units.

An expansion board offers additional I/Os.

The new variable speed drives arising from Emotron VSA/VSC are displayed at the Hannover Messe in Germany, which takes place 16-20 April.

Emotron can be found in hall 14, stand L19.
