Low flow no problem for Promass at Croda Chemicals

An Endress + Hauser product story
Edited by the Processingtalk editorial team May 3, 2004

The problem with hydrogenation at Croda Chemicals Europe site in Hull was the requirement to measure mass flow of hydrogen over a wide range, and the Promass 83F solved the requirement

Croda Chemicals Europe site in Hull is the polymer additives division of Croda Chemicals Europe, manufacturing a wide range of products designed to optimise polymer processing, such as fatty amides and lubricating applications.

There are various plants at the Hull site, including a hydrogenation plant.

Here, hydrogen is added to the process to induce a chemical reaction that changes the properties of the oil.

The problem with hydrogenation is the requirement to measure mass flow of hydrogen over a wide range (from high to low flows).

Peter Moss, Instrument Engineer at the Hull site, had tried a number of different flow technologies on this application, e.g turbine and differential pressure, but they didn't provide the accuracy and range (turndown) required.

Peter specifically wanted a device that would measure the high flow rates at the beginning of the hydrogenation process, as well as the very low flows at the end of the process.

The low flows were of special interest, as this could lead to a reduction in processing time.

Endress+Hauser suggested the Promass 83F Coriolis mass flowmeter, as it had been used successfully on other similar applications.

The Promass 83F combines high accuracy and offers a large turndown, making it ideal for hydrogenation applications.

It can easily cope with both high and low flows due to its excellent zero stability and measuring accuracy in gases.

Its 'Touch Control' control operation is a real benefit in hazardous areas, as it allows swift programming without removing the housing.

Peter Moss commented: "Endress+Hauser PROline Promass 83F provided the ideal solution for our application with high and low flows.

Its compact design and 'Touch Control' features mean it is easy to use and maintain.".
