Enviro Technology Services and the National Environmental Technology Centre have joined forces to deliver an intelligent air monitoring and data management system to the Government of Gibraltar

Two market leaders in the air quality and technology fields - Enviro Technology Services and the National Environmental Technology Centre (Netcen) - have joined forces to deliver an intelligent air monitoring and data management system to the Government of Gibraltar Enviro Technology and Netcen - an operating division of AEA Technology Environment - recently installed two automatic air pollution monitoring stations on the Rock of Gibraltar

Measurements from these stations will fulfil the Gibraltar Government obligations under the EU Air Quality (AQ) framework and daughter directives.

Like the UK, Gibraltar has an obligation to transpose EU environmental laws into national legislation.

In addition to meeting its statutory monitoring commitments, the air quality measurements are also widely disseminated as a service to the Gibraltar public.

The installation followed a preliminary assessment of air quality in Gibraltar that was undertaken by Netcen under Article 5 of the EU Framework AQ Directive.

This assessment estimated baseline air quality concentrations and went on to identify the scale of ambient monitoring necessary to fulfil Gibraltar's obligations under both the framework and daughter directives.

Following the assessment, the Gibraltar Government commissioned Netcen to establish two multi-pollutant monitoring stations on the Rock.

This is where Enviro Technology came on board.

"We have often worked with Enviro Technology over recent years" says Netcen Principal Air Quality Consultant Sean Christiansen: "In our work with local authorities and national monitoring networks, we have developed good relationships with key players in environmental monitoring products.

On this occasion, after considering a range of equipment, we selected ET as we knew they would be well suited to this bespoke and demanding installation".

In order to ensure the safe transportation and installation of the equipment, engineers from ET travelled to Gibraltar to oversee the commissioning of the stations.

After installation, ET worked closely with Netcen staff to train local operators to enable them to operate and troubleshoot the equipment over the coming years.

"We cater for all types of clients, who often require stations to be installed in many different types of environments," says ET Operations Director Duncan Mounsor: "For instance, the Gibraltar stations have to function reliably and accurately, delivering sound data under all conditions, including ambient temperatures up to 400C".

The service doesn't end, of course, once the stations are commissioned and operators trained.

From its service centre, Enviro Technology can work with clients based in the UK and overseas to work on equipment problems and offer speedy solutions to combat equipment malfunction or breakdown.

"If required, we will travel at short notice to remote stations in order to tackle any problems 'hands on' - it's all part of the service," adds Duncan.

"We appreciate that local governments and our other customers just can't afford to lose data if there's a breakdown.

Our clients know that when they use ET for monitoring station installation and service they are using a company that supplies high-quality, high-specification products that will function at a proven performance level, 24/7, for many years.

In addition to the stations fulfilling EU monitoring requirements, dissemination of data to the public is a key objective of the monitoring programme.

According to Sean: "Netcen has developed exciting new technologies enabling lightning-fast and reliable data collection from Gibraltar to Netcen headquarters in Oxfordshire.

These systems will keep Netcen at the forefront of Air Quality data management".

To see the Gibraltar data in near-real time visit www.gibraltarairquality.gi developed for the Gibraltar Government.

As Sean points out: "The website also provides the latest temperatures for that part of the Mediterranean for those still planning a holiday.".
