CEMS cost savings a hit with UK power stations
Air quality monitoring specialists Enviro Technology are to install 11 Continuous Emissions Monitoring Systems (CEMS) at two UK Power Plants - Uskmouth Power and Saltend Cogeneration - during August
In addition to the installation, Enviro Technology will also work closely with the plants on on-going maintenance and servicing of the systems.
Both Saltend and Uskmouth chose to upgrade their current CEMS in order to bring their technology more in line with the requirements of the forthcoming Large Combustion Plants Directive (LCPD) and to meet the emissions monitoring procedures and processes detailed in EN 14181.
After consultation with Uskmouth, Enviro Technology was asked to provide CEMS for monitoring six outlet ducts (two outlets from each boiler).
The systems supplied comprise of OPSIS AR600, AR650 Cross-Duct Analysers, OPSIS O2000 Oxygen Probes and DR800 Dust Monitors.
For Saltend Cogeneration Enviro Technology has supplied five systems comprising OPSIS AR600, AR650 Cross Duct Analysers and OPSIS O2000 Oxygen Probes.
Says Robert Barlow, the Control and Instrumentation Team Leader at Saltend Cogeneration: "We chose to work with ET due to them offering high specification technology that was MCERTS approved and fully met with all of the requirements of our IPC licence, the LCPD and EN 144181.
Initial estimations, based on comparisons with CEMS technology traditionally used, have shown that we can potentially save in excess of GBP100,000 over five years in maintenance and operation costs".
Saltend has also worked with Enviro Technology to further eliminate the risks associated with operators working at height.
"Following the integration of ET's 'Fast Loop' System - which comprises of a pipe being inserted into a duct and fed down to ground level - engineers are no longer required to ascend the stack for maintenance tasks - thus giving the system an added safety bonus".
Enviro Technology Operations Director, Duncan Mounsor added: "With the launch date for compliance with the LCPD approaching (January 2008) many more industrial, process and combustion plants have been contacting us regarding their CEMS.
Having worked in the CEMS industry for the past 24 years we believe we can offer clients bespoke CEMS technology that ticks all of the right boxes.
It's been a busy year so far and we hope this continues".
