Advice on 'Buildings energy performance' directive

A The Energy Event product story
Edited by the Processingtalk editorial team Aug 5, 2008

Visitors to one of the Energy Event seminars will have access to essential advice about what the 'Energy Performance of Buildings' EU Directive means for UK businesses and the public sector

The Energy Event, sponsored by Total Gas and Power, takes place at the National Motorcycle Museum, Birmingham on 10th-11th September 2008, and a joint seminar programme presented by leading energy industry organisations ESTA and CIBSE will cover this topic.

According to the Department for Communities and Local Government, buildings are responsible for almost 50% of the UK energy consumption and carbon emissions.

As part of the European legislation - the Energy Performance of Buildings Directive - the Department is therefore introducing measures in England and Wales to improve the energy efficiency of buildings.

The reforms are currently being rolled out and from 1 October 2008 all properties when bought, sold, built or rented will need an Energy Performance Certificate.

Larger public buildings will also need to display an energy certificate.

To help anyone unsure about what this means for their business or public sector building, specialists from ESTA (Energy Services and Technology Association) and CIBSE (Chartered Institution of Building Services Engineers) will be providing essential advice in the form of a joint seminar programme on Wednesday 10th September at The Energy Event.

The first seminar, starting at 10am, will look at what the Directive means legally for businesses with advice on what should be done and by when.

It will then move on to look specifically at Energy Performance Certificates (EPCs) covering everything from the information needed and how to calculate energy performance through to the commercial impact of the ratings and how to achieve a good grade.

The second seminar of the day, starting at 12noon, discusses Display Energy Certificates (DECs) and looks at which business sectors and buildings are affected.

It will then cover certificate content, accessing metered data and improving operational ratings, followed by advice on how to manage DECs for many properties at once.

The final seminar of the day at 2pm will provide delegates with advice on plant inspections and the legal requirements in relation to air-conditioning and boilers.

The seminar will then cover the role of an energy assessor for EPCs, DECs and plant inspections firstly by looking at how to become an assessor and then discussing accredited bodies and assessor responsibilities as well as how to operate with the legal structures.

The ESTA and CIBSE seminars are part of the conference and seminar programme at The Energy Event which is the only annual UK exhibition and conference to focus solely on energy procurement, management and efficiency, including water efficiency.

Also hosting conferences and seminars this year will be EIC (Energy Information Centre), MEUC (Major Energy Users Council), BCAS (British Compressed Air Society) and Envirowise.

Headlining the conference programme will be the Energy Insight Conference which is aimed at directors and senior management and will primarily focus on energy procurement.

Those interested in attending are advised to register early, as, while there is no cost to attend, places are limited and much sought after.
