Supporting the process industries in
Ireland
Eoin O Riain of Read-out.net reports on a conversation with Joe Hoare, Cork office Manager for Emerson, about their current activities and commitment to supporting the process industries in Ireland
The Emerson Process Management offices in Cork were established in August 1999 This was just at the time when the DeltaV digital automation system introduced a step change into the whole concept of distributed control systems, according to Joe Hoare, the Cork office manager for Emerson

Instrumentation "At Home" day in Cork
An Emerson Open day, featuring Seminars and an Exhibition, will be held at the Great Southern Hotel, Cork Airport, from 0930 to 1730 on 28 September 2005
Joe is proud of the role played by the Emerson Cork office in the resulting pharmaceutical plant new-build and expansion projects.
"Ireland, and Cork in particular, represents one of the world areas with the largest installed base of DeltaV, and the engineering and support provided from our Cork offices has been a major factor in achieving this." A recent project is a prime example, where the design and configuration for a new production facility, an extension to an existing installation, has occupied the offices throughout the year with up to 20 engineers.
"Local subcontractors built and installed the hardware, which included 2600 I/O, and final operational configuration and FAT testing was run from our own offices here.

The installation and commissioning is now complete, and plant start-up progressing" commented Joe.
Whilst this system uses the DeltaV digital automation system and Foundation fieldbus communications, with much Rosemount and Micro Motion instrumentation, the engineering also includes specialist equipment supplied for example by Masoneilan.
The engineering team run from the Cork offices is experienced with most of the requirements of batch processing: Lead Engineer Steve Wilford has 29 years of batch engineering expertise with Emerson, and has been particularly involved in the FDA validation of the recent installation.
The 4000 square feet of office space close to Cork Airport also provide a solid base for Sales and Engineering support to all Emerson customers across Ireland.
Valves and regulators account manager Frank Flanagan is a well known face across the country: Frank has been involved with the Fisher Controls valves and actuators product range for over 22 years.
Also with Emerson since the Cork office opened, Gemma Long specialises in the Rosemount pressure and temperature transmitters, DP flow measurement instruments associated with Pitot tubes or orifice plates, and level measurement equipment.
Support for flow measurement technologies comes from John Condon, who specialises in Micro Motion Coriolis mass-flow meters, plus also Rosemount vortex and electromagnetic meters.
In October 2003, Emerson hosted one of their series of "Manufacturing Excellence" conferences at the Great Southern Hotel in Cork, where over 130 people heard presentations from the industry suppliers and customers from all of Ireland, such as Wyeth Pharmaceuticals, Bristol-Myers Squibb and Pfizer, about the recent advances in control systems and pharmaceutical production techniques.
This is perhaps the most visible, highest profile activity organised around the Cork office, but training seminars are regularly organised for the existing and potential customer base.
Joe Hoare sees this as confirmation of the Emerson commitment to continued support and development of Irish process and instrumentation industry, developing alliances with local suppliers as well as gaining further customers: "We will be planning another Irish conference in the Manufacturing Excellence series in the near future, when we hope everyone in the industry will attend.".
