Emerson now holds 4 internationally recognised standards for Quality and Health and Safety at its Leicester facility, and was the first organisation worldwide to be certificated to ISO/TS 29001 by BSI

Emerson Process Management in Leicester announces that it has recently achieved certification to ISO14001 Environmental Management Systems and OHSAS 18001 Occupational Health and Safety These complement the company's existing certification to ISO:9001:2000 Quality Standard which was gained in 2002 and ISO/TS 29001:2003 quality standard for the petroleum, petrochemical and natural gas industries which was awarded in 2006

Emerson now holds four internationally recognised standards for Quality and Health and Safety at its Leicester facility, which was also the first organisation worldwide to be awarded certification to ISO/TS 29001 by BSI.

"Emerson Process Management is committed to full compliance with Health, Safety and Environmental legislation and we are delighted to be awarded ISO14001 and OHAS 18001 accreditation," said Peter Cave, Quality Manager for UK and Ireland, and Coordinating Manager for Health and Safety, Emerson Process Management: "This recent success means that the Leicester facility is the first within Emerson worldwide to achieve compliance with all four standards".

"To achieve certification to all four standards is a significant milestone," said Andrew Morris, BSI Business Development Director for UK Management Systems: "Emerson Process Management is a well run organisation with a management team that recognises the benefits these standards provide in a competitive market place".

Emerson Process Management is proactive in developing objectives and initiatives that support corporate policy for quality and health and safety, and the company has developed Key Performance Indicators (KPI) and tools to measure success and ensure continuous improvement against year on year targets.

For example, through critical analysis of the processes on site, the CO2 impact has been reduced by 90%, which equates to 1,700 tons per annum - primarily achieved through electrical energy reduction.

An energy strategy was implemented which included replacing the lighting throughout the site with energy efficient, sensor controlled systems, timed controlled air-conditioning systems, changing working hours for some processes and educating the staff to turn equipment off when not immediately required.

All the company waste streams are now being monitored from general waste to coffee cups, batteries and printer cartridges, with more than 60% of the total waste being recycled.

A waste minimisation strategy targets the generation of waste rather than its disposal.

All of these procedures and working practices are documented, controlled and communicated using the company web based Integrated Management System (IMS).

The programme is on-going and regular internal audits and management reviews ensure that the company and all of its employees are continually working to protect the environment and improve health and safety performance.

ISO 14001 specifies the requirements for an environmental management system.

It applies to those environmental aspects which the organisation has under its control and over which it can be expected to have an influence.

These include recycling, energy efficiency, packaging, water usage and waste reduction.

OHSAS 18001 gives the requirements for an occupational health and safety management system to enable an organisation to identify and control its OH+S risks and to continually improve its performance.
