Introduction to Chemical Engineering principles

An Emerson Process Management - UK/Ireland product story
Edited by the Processingtalk editorial team May 25, 2004

This one-day training course gives a basic understanding of the world of Chemical Engineering: it is aimed at process plant managers, operations staff, automation, control and instrument engineers

This one-day training course aims to give the uninitiated a basic understanding and insight into a small slice of the world of Chemical Engineering.

It is aimed at all those working in the process industries who are not Chemical Engineers - plant managers, operations staff, automation, control and instrument engineers - but who would like to understand something of what makes process plants work.

The course leaders, Peter Burton and Jonathan Love from the University of Newcastle, have a breadth of industrial experience as well as academic expertise.

They are both heavily involved in the Partnership in Automation and Control Training (PACT), which provides Short Courses and Postgraduate Degrees in Process Automation.

The course introduces the chemical engineering concept of unit operation and selects two, distillation and heat transfer, for a more detailed study.

In each case, an overview is given of the equipment used for typical applications of the unit operation.

This is then followed by a Case Study into the quantitative design of one item of equipment, highlighting the physical and chemical engineering principles behind the design.

The first study involves the design of a three-stage distillation column, the second the thermal design of the column re-boiler.

The final section discusses the principles of operation of continuous distillation columns with particular emphasis on temperature profiles.

The Training Day, presented as a part of the Manufacturing Excellence Conference this year, is on 15th June, and allows delegates to add the course to attendance at this event.

Manufacturing Excellence takes place at the Marriott Forest of Arden Hotel in Warwickshire - near Coventry and the NEC - from 15-17 June.
