During the transfer of liquefied gases, the absolute pressure available at the incoming suction line is often very low, as compared to the level that is required for the pumps to operate correctly.
To overcome this difficulty, the barrel-mounted technique is often used in the petrochemical industries.
This consists of mounting the pump in a barrel that is buried, so as to lower pump aspiration and thus increase the net inlet pressure (NPSHa: Net Positive Suction Head available).

With conventional barrel pumps, the motor remains outside the barrel and the transmission shaft passes through the mounting plate.
A sealing system with a mechanical seal must therefore be installed.
To prevent difficulties mounting the shaft line, as well as leakage problems with mechanical packing, Optimex offers barrel canned motor pumps, and hence a seal-less system.
The hydraulic part is usually multistage with an inducer.
The whole assembly thus comprises a pumping system with no risk of leaks, which offers the proven reliability of canned motor pumps.
This system advantageously replaces pumps with ball bearings immersed in the liquid or with stators that are in contact with the pumped product for LPG or cryogenic applications.
The Optimex pumpset is vertically mounted, with suction towards the bottom, at the bottom of the barrel - the length of which is calculated to lower the suction by a height compatible with the NPSH required by the pump.
The barrel fills with liquid from the inlet in the upper part (at ground level).
The pumpset, which is submerged in the liquid, discharges into a double jacket around the motor, which communicates with the outlet piping; this is connected to the mounting plate at the top of the barrel and also serves to support the pumpset.
The canned motor is cooled by the circulation in the double jacket and by an internal circuit in the rotor housing.
The stator is protected against any penetration of liquid by a liner.
The stator chamber is filled with oil and kept full by an expansion tank located on the mounting plate.
This facilitates the conduction of the heat generated, which is evacuated by the discharge flow.
This system limits overheating of the motor, and allows pumping of liquids with high vapour pressure.
The bearings (bushings) are lubricated by the pumped liquid.
To prevent stress on the thrust bearings, a hydro-dynamic balancing system of the axial forces allows contact-free operation.
For starting and stationary periods, a magnetic thrust bearing is also added.
The power cables run through a tube to the terminal box, which is located on the mounting plate.
The instrumentation required for correct operation in explosive zones is fitted on the mounting plate (presence of liquid, stator pressure switch, coil temperature, and presence of oil).
