Bringing remote I/O to Foundation
technology
The Fieldbus Foundation has announced the launch of a new initiative to develop a specification for standardising the interface of remote I/O into the Foundation architecture
The Fieldbus Foundation, conducting a press briefing at the ISA Expo 2006 Automation Conference and Exhibition in Houston, has announced the launch of a new initiative to develop a specification for standardising the interface of remote I/O into the Foundation architecture The new specification will define the structure for interfacing remote I/O over the Fieldbus Foundation tightly integrated High Speed Ethernet (HSE) control backbone

According to the Fieldbus Foundation director of technology development, David A Glanzer, the addition of remote I/O further tightens the integration of process instrumentation within the Foundation architecture.
Glanzer said, "The Fieldbus Foundation has always been driven by two main goals: meeting the market need for an open, tightly integrated automation infrastructure, and continuously improving the technology to enable users to realise CAPEX and OPEX improvements.
In other words - make it open and make it capable of delivering business benefits." Fieldbus Foundation President and CEO Rich Timoney added, "Remote I/O is a three billion dollar market, about one-third of which is connected to DCS.
The fastest growth in this segment is occurring in petroleum and gas, which is a perfect match to the fastest growing markets for the Foundation.
Users do not yet have a single infrastructure that meets all their needs, but that is exactly what they would prefer.
Other networks offer communication capabilities but stop there.
Foundation technology is about much more than just communication.
Offering scalable integration, distributed control and extensive communication for delivering business intelligence, Foundation technology is more of a system infrastructure.
The addition of remote I/O is a logical and desirable inclusion in that infrastructure.
