The Fieldbus Foundation has announced its delight with the success of its booth at the Interkama 2007 International Trade Fair, held April 16-20 in Hannover, Germany

Coordinated by the Fieldbus Foundation German Marketing Committee, the 300m2 booth adopted the theme "Changing the Playing Field", and demonstrated the scope of Foundation fieldbus technology in process and hybrid applications that makes it one of the most advanced and scalable process automation infrastructures available today Twenty five Fieldbus Foundation member companies, representing many of the world's leading automation equipment providers, participated in this year's booth

Several purpose built kiosks were used to display registered devices, host systems, tools and services to demonstrate key fieldbus applications and Foundation technology solutions.

Experts on hand helped visiting end users, integrators, contractors and engineers acquire a broad depth of information.

Also on the booth were live demonstrations of some Fieldbus Foundation development initiatives including High Speed Ethernet (HSE) technology and electronic device description language (EDDL) integration.

Also, the forthcoming Foundation fieldbus safety instrumented systems (FF-SIS) was explained in detail.

An unexpected highlight was a visit to the Fieldbus Foundation booth by the Prime Minister of the Flemish Government, Yves Leterme, accompanied by a television camera crew, during his tour of the Interkama fair.

A briefing to the German trade press took place on the Fieldbus Foundation booth on Tuesday 17th April from 1500-1600, followed by a reception.

Dr Gunther Kegel, chairman of the Fieldbus Foundation EMEA Executive Advisory Council (EAC) and member of the Fieldbus Foundation Board of Directors, provided an update of several aspects of Foundation technology and its impact in the EMEA region.

In particular, he presented the findings of a recent market study by the ARC Advisory Group on the market adoption of fieldbus protocols, and an update of the Fieldbus Foundation involvement with the EDDL cooperation team (ECT).

Earlier in the day, the ECT and the FDT Group jointly announced a co-operation agreement to combine efforts and work towards a single, unified solution for device integration compatible with both technologies.

As part of this agreement, the FDT Group will join the ECT.

Current members include the Fieldbus Foundation, the HART Communication Foundation, the Profibus Nutzer Organisation (PNO), and OPC.

Full details of the press briefing are available from the Fieldbus Foundation website.

A panel discussion entitled "New Cooperation in Industrial Communication" took place on Tuesday 17th April at the Interkama Forum.

The panel included representatives from all parties associated with the ECT/FDT co-operation agreement including: Rich Timoney (Fieldbus Foundation); Martin Zielinsky (ECT); Tom Burke (OPC); Ron Helson (HART Communication Foundation); Edgar Kuster (PNO); Flavio Tolfo (FDT Group); Hans-Georg Kumpfmuller (ECT); and Achim Laubenstein (FDT Group).

The panel discussed issues and answered technical questions posed by an audience of 60+ attendees and panel moderator Prof Dr-Ing Klaus Bender (ITM - Technical University of Munich).

Marc Van Pelt, Vice-President Fieldbus Foundation, EMEA Operations, welcomed the announcement made by the ECT and FDT Group: "This agreement is a major step forward towards satisfying the market needs for a device integration solution that is supported by the majority of the world's leading control and instrumentation suppliers - and in the context of today's modern automated enterprise".

He added, "To make this announcement at the beginning of Interkama week was perfect timing.

Interested parties have had several opportunities to address their queries to the senior representatives from the participating organisations at events including panel discussions, press briefings and forums".

During the show on Tuesday April 17th, the Fieldbus Foundation EMEA Executive Advisory Council (EAC) held its annual meeting.

The EMEA EAC, comprised of senior executives from leading EMEA control and instrumentation companies, was established in 2005 in response to the growing demand for Foundation technology in the Europe, Middle East and Africa industrial markets.

The advisory council is dedicated to promoting the adoption of Foundation technology by automation equipment suppliers and end users especially in these regions.

Participating members at Interkama 2007 included: ABB, BIS Prozesstechnik, Burkert, Emerson Process Management, Endress+Hauser, Fieldbus International, Hans Turck, Honeywell, Invensys, Leoni Kerpen, Krohne, Magnetrol, Masoneilan, MTL Instruments, Northwire, Pepperl+Fuchs, Phoenix Contact, R Stahl, Rockwell Automation, Siemens, Samson, Softing, Topworx, Wika and Yokogawa.

During a brief resume meeting on Thursday April 19th, the Fieldbus Foundation German Marketing Committee decided to participate again at Interkama 2008 in Hannover, Germany.

Due to the growing interest in Foundation technology and the continuous increase in the number of participating Fieldbus Foundation member companies over the last few years, the German Marketing Committee is expecting more than thirty participants to display their Foundation fieldbus solutions at next year's booth.
