Kee buys six Flender gearboxes for Welsh project

A Siemens Flender product story
Edited by the Processingtalk editorial team Oct 28, 2008

Kee Process has bought six of the largest Flender gearboxes it has ever ordered, from Siemens Automation and Drives, for a project in Wales.

The company supplied six Kee Process rotating biological contactors (RBCs), modular treatment plants for medium and large-scale applications, to Crynant, a small village in the Neath Valley.

The contactors will form part of a GBP3.3m investment by Dand#373;r Cymru Welsh Water to upgrade its treatment processes.

The 4.5M, six-bank RBCs are Kee's largest UK application and have been performing well since their switch-on in December 2007.

Imtech Process installed the Kee units, which incorporated Flender FZG gear units (size H3DH11), Motox units (size KAF108K4-1LA9) and Siemens eff1 motors (size 113-4KA).

This combination drive design achieves high ratios for low speed operation (around 1 rpm output speed, with 4kw power and 63,500Nm gearbox rating).

Alastair McInnes, contracts engineer for Kee Process, said: 'Due to being driven by direct coupled geared motors, the units are virtually silent in operation.

'We selected the Flender-Siemens combination due to its reliability, low maintenance requirements, high torque and ongoing low power demands.' Dand#373;r Cymru Welsh Water is investing GBP1.2bn in its water and sewerage network between 2005 and 2010.
