Flotech AquaProfiler monitors open channel flow

A Flotech Solutions product story
Edited by the Processingtalk editorial team Sep 4, 2008

Flotech Solutions has launched the AquaProfiler open-channel flow-monitoring system for river or stream flow monitoring on watercourses without flow obstruction or civil engineering work.

It uses acoustic profiling from a single transducer assembly, typically positioned centrally on the bed of the channel, which scans and profiles the flow around the sensor at a range of up to 5m.

The profile developed for each measurement is based on up to 128 cells across the width of the flow and at different heights above the bed: the surface level is also measured.

Flow rate and direction in each cell is measured as an ultrasonic beam is electronically scanned and sampled by the locally mounted processor-based electronic unit, and the total flow of the monitored cross section is computed.

No site-specific calibration set-up is required, and the AquaProfiler also automatically adjusts operation for optimum performance with a changing water level.

It measures flow to an accuracy of 0.5 per cent of the measured and reported value, in channels up to 5m deep: the unit automatically copes with changing hydraulic conditions, for example from backflow or additional intercepting flows.

The Compact Flash removable memory, of up to 2GB, can store measured data at programmable logging intervals, from 1 to 60 minutes: the electronics unit is able to transmit the data using GSM telemetry.

Alternative clamp-on or insertion sensors are available, even for temporary portable use in pipes or artificial channels.

The AquaProfiler is a hydrometry aid for natural stream monitoring, flood alerts, effluent channels, intakes for power stations, and storm flow and sewer monitoring for local councils.
