A Flowserve product story

Worcester Valves and Norbro Actuators from Flowserve Flow Control have received third party approval to Safety Integrity Level (SIL) rating 3 from BASEEFA

Worcester Valves and Norbro Actuators have received third party approval to Safety Integrity Level (SIL) rating 3 from BASEEFA under the IEC61508 safety systems standard.

Flowserve Flow Control manufactures these product ranges in the UK, and understands that this is the first time the standard has been awarded to a UK-based company manufacturing valves and actuators.

The standard requires all safety critical systems to carry a SIL rating.

These run from SIL 1 (low risk plant) to SIL 4 (high risk plant).

The SIL 3 rating is the maximum obtainable for an individual valve or actuator.

Commenting on the achievement, Stuart Wishart of Flowserve Flow Control said: "Safe performance is crucial in all processing and control contexts.

Purchasers of our products now have the extra reassurance that they are buying components which comply with this important safety standard".

IEC 61508 is the International Electro-technical Commission standard on electrical, electronic and programmable electronic safety systems in control and instrumentation.

It takes in the whole "safety loop" from the sensor (input device) the logic solver and the output (actuator).

Each element in the loop is assessed, and its use, environment, maintenance schedule, calibration and the competence of operators are all included in IEC 61508.
