New contracts follow on from the successful completion of the installation a "Clean in Place" and product feed solution on the stick pack lines at the Heinz sauce production facility in Telford

Following on from the successful completion of a contract to install a new "Clean in Place" and product feed solution on the stick pack lines at the Heinz sauce production facility in Telford, FMA Process Engineering of Lichfield has been awarded a further contract with Heinz With around 20 different sauces in regular production at the Telford plant, Heinz wanted to further utilise the FMA CIP technology - this time to enhance the cleaning process applied to its "mixing" vessels

With six 1000kg process vessels on the sauce production line, and each requiring thorough cleaning in between batches, Heinz sought a more efficient cleaning solution - one that would significantly reduce cleaning time, provide greater flexibility in the cleaning regime and further enhance the existing levels of operator safety in place at the plant.

Via an expansion of the existing Siemens-controlled FMA CIP set, and a thorough rationalisation of all process pipework, and addition of rotary spray devices, FMA were able to reduce the typical vessel cleaning time from 7 hours to under 5 hours.

At the same time, greater levels of selectivity in the cleaning regime were also introduced, with the ability to clean the whole process at once or to continue to operate either the hot or the cold production lines, whilst the other was being cleaned.

Through the introduction of a new Recipe Selection Process, a "hot water rinse" option was also made available for use in between production of batches of the same sauce.

Utilising the existing plant control systems, the FMA solution involved the introduction of a remote MCC/PLC (Motor Control Centre) to operate scavenge pumps and agitators.

Flow meters were incorporated into the design to improve the quality of the cleaning process and simple "additional" safeguards were put in place to further enhance operator health and safety.

All software for the cleaning processes was written by FMA and a user interface in the process area was provided.

As is typical with all new FMA installations, prior to final commissioning a thorough training programme was also embarked upon for client employees.

Via use of the latest media, communication and simulation techniques, all key operating staff and managers involved in the CIP process were provided with a full familiarisation including a "live walkthrough" of the Clean in Place solution.

"In fulfilling this latest Heinz contract we were able to meet the company production and financial objectives," commented FMA Sales and Marketing Director, Paul Bunyan.

"Using the existing equipment and process vessels already in place at the Telford facility, a fully-automated process cleaning facility was implemented - one that further extends the levels of Clean in Place and minimises the need to halt production whenever cleaning is required".

Established in 1981, FMA Process Engineering has established itself as one of the leading project management and process engineering contractors in the UK, is a Microsoft Certified Partner and a Solutions Partner with Siemens, Rockwell, Intellution and Wonderware.

An ISO9001 accredited business, FMA are acutely aware of the need for quality in all aspects of systems design and see their own internal standards and procedures covering the design, implementation, validation and testing of the systems they supply as a key differentiator for them as systems integrators in the food and beverage marketplace.
