Leading food and drink companies in the Yorkshire region are being invited to a ground breaking Innovation Forum that will help sharpen their competitive edge

Leading food and drink companies in the Yorkshire region are being invited to a ground breaking Innovation Forum that will help sharpen their competitive edge The event, masterminded by The Food Technology Advisory Service for Yorkshire and Humber (established by Yorkshire Forward to deliver technical support to the region's food and drink SMEs), will take place on 4 October 2006 at the (5 Star) Thorpe Park Hotel in Leeds

Chaired by Simon Allison, the Technical Innovation Manager at Sainsburys, the Innovation Forum, which culminates in a series of inspiring presentations from leading industry figures, will be preceded by a "speed dating" session during which delegates can meet industry experts on a "one to one" basis to troubleshoot individual problems in confidence.

Speaker Ken Johnston, Science Director, Food Processing Faraday Partnership provides a clear insight into the thrust of the Forum and his own presentation when he commented: "The UK food market is very dynamic and is world leading in certain product sectors.

The introduction of new technologies is the only way to enhance, or maintain competitiveness in an increasingly international market".

Ken will be using a variety of case studies to illustrate how new technologies can enhance competitiveness.

Also addressing the Forum will be Graham Clayton, Food Chain Centre of Industrial Collaboration, who will provide an insight into the market opportunities in Functional Foods, John Sorsby, Yorkshire Forward, who will be highlighting the opportunities for innovation in the region and Deb Neeson and David Durie, FTAS and Get Sorted, who will jointly explore the product development process from concept to launch.

Karen Carlyle, Regional Food Group, will be covering the importance of branding and will demonstrate using a case study the factors that need to be taken into consideration to achieve a successful brand.

Finally, Ian Blakemore and Sarah Knapper, Food Processing Faraday Partnership and FTAS are using the Forum to unveil "The Guide to Food Manufacturing Management".

The "Guide" will provide businesses in the region with a concise, clear guide to legislation and topical subjects, as well as summaries of established technologies/processes.

Its aim is to provoke and assist business owners to adopt best practice.

Sarah, Managing Director of FTAS and the driving force behind the Forum, commented: "Earlier this summer, I was chatting to a baker who told me he needed to 'innovate to survive' and yet he could never find the time because there was always something more important.

'Innovate to survive' has stayed with me and I decided that I wanted to do something to help.

It has been the inspiration for this one day Innovation Forum.

The core purpose of the Forum is to enhance the competitive advantage of the region's food and drink companies by encouraging higher levels of innovation and a more creative approach to new product development.

The format of the event gives delegates a unique opportunity to obtain the latest information and discuss their own problems individually with a wide range of industry professionals".

Although the event is by invitation only companies interested in attending should contact the FTAS.
