The Technical Support Programme offered by the Food Technology Advisory Service (FTAS) has delivered a valuable and targeted resource to Fosters Bakery The Barnsley based family run company, which has built an enviable reputation for supplying high quality bread and bakery products, was able to call upon the experienced team at FTAS to meet a number of very specific and pressing needs

For some time FTAS has provided technical support to Fosters Bakery, offering a pre-audit service which included reviewing, testing and preparing internal systems, prior to the company's annual BRC Global Food Standard certification audit.

The audit is used to evaluate manufacturers of retailers own brand food products and is regarded as the benchmark for best practice in the food industry.

When the company Technical Manager left, FTAS was able to step into the breach offering the services of an experienced food technologist, Catherine Riley, to act as an interim manager for the six month period, whilst a replacement was recruited.

Carl Smales, a Food Systems graduate from Leeds Metropolitan University, was appointed as the new Fosters QA Manager in September 2006.

Catherine has however been retained to mentor Carl during the early stages of his appointment and to continue to assist with the maintenance of the BRC systems.

The recent BRC evaluation visit resulted in Fosters Bakery retaining their A Grade.

Michael Taylor, Operations Director at Fosters Bakery commented, "We have been delighted with the support we have received from FTAS.

Having flexible access to experienced food industry professionals means that we can supplement our internal resources at times of greatest need.

Catherine brings with her a wealth of knowledge and contacts and her input as a mentor to Carl has been invaluable".

A typical technical support programme offers a number of benefits to companies, including:.

* Access to experienced food scientists/technologists.

* On-site practical support and advice.

* Support with on-going technical issues.

* System reviews.

* Microbiological sampling and data review.

In addition all companies joining the programme will receive free access to the FTAS Technical Resource Centre in Tadcaster; an introduction to the Food Processing Faraday Partnership with initial site evaluation; and free entree to the Food Chain Centre of Industrial Collaboration and Functional Foods Forum.

There is a level of technical support to meet the individual needs of the company.

Details of the bronze, silver, gold and platinum programmes are detailed on the FTAS website or are available on request.

Food and drink businesses who require practical support to improve business performance should contact Sarah Knapper, at the Food Technology Advisory Service.
