Non-intrusive flowmeters provide ideal
solution
Clamp-on ultrasonic flowmeters from Ultraflux have enabled Flexsys from North Wales to monitor effluent streams in GRP pipes, where other units failed to measure satisfactorily
Flexsys, based in Wrexham, North Wales, are a large manufacturer of rubber based products which have applications in motor and aviation manufacture, they also produce other general rubber based products, including belts, hoses and footwear Part of their manufacturing process involves the storing and transferring of chemicals which help to cure and protect the rubber, increasing its durability, colour and heat resistance

Ultrasonic flowmeters monitor WFI for GSK
Glaxo Smith-Kline in Harlow uses a significant amount of WFI, 'Ultra Pure Water', and has introduced reliable Minisonic ultrasonic flowmeters as part of their water quality monitoring system
Their Wrexham site incorporates two very large effluent treatment balance tanks which are fed by two individual pipes supplied from a common header tank.
However, the original pipework had been installed without any provision for metering, and to complicate matters further, the existing pipe material was a combination of Polyurethane, GRP and a final rough GRP overcoat.
The problem: Flexsys had a requirement to install process flowmeters on the treatment plant in order to ascertain the percentage flow going to each tank.

Portable ultrasonic flowmeter is function-packed
An accurate, powerful, yet compact and simple-to-operate ultrasonic portable flowmeter is the latest product to be introduced by flowmeter specialists Flowline
Among the 'obstacles' which needed to be overcome were, a difference of opinion on the flow volume being split between each tank and the pipework materials and sizes were not readily available.
Also, the flows could not be shut down to enable the insertion of an in-line meter into the pipe, so the whole operation had to be completed whilst the plant was running.
The complexity of these challenges is underlined by the fact that no less than five other ultrasonic manufacturers and suppliers had attempted to provide a flow measurement solution, all of which failed.
The solution: Flowline acknowledged the unique challenges of the application and following a detailed site survey, recommended that Flexsys should trial their clamp-on Ultraflux flowmeter.
A key requirement for the meter was its ability to provide accurate and repeatable flow data and to check that the flow fell roughly within the range expected.
Following successful trials Flexsys placed orders for the equipment and the ultrasonic meters were installed without any problems.
Flows to each tank were monitored and were found to add up to exactly the flow being measured.
This was performed by the customers master flowmeter on the common header with flows of 50 lit/sec, while the split was found to be 20/30 lit/sec.
Thanks to the accuracy and reliability of the data Flexsys have achieved optimum control and therefore more effective treatment prior to discharge.
The versatile Minisonic system can be used on pipe diameters ranging from 10mm up to 3.3 metres (up to 10 metres on some systems) and is effective on most liquids, including those which are non-conductive.
The unit uses non-invasive, external probes that are simply clamped on to the pipe to facilitate quick installation and immediate measurement, while set-up and operation can be performed either by keypad or external software.
Other features and benefits include all new digital processing functions which use multiple processors, resulting in faster response times.
Also available as an optional extra depending on application specifications, are a range of portable systems which provide a choice of configurations from previously stored data from other sites, a battery life indicator and an integral data logger which provides over 6months capacity at 2minute intervals.
The Minisonic 801 provides a measuring accuracy of up to +/-1.0% of reading and is suitable for a wide range of control applications.
For example, monitoring flows in all water and waste processes, pump testing, various oil products either refined or crude, petrochemical and food industries, or wherever fixed or portable, highly accurate and reliable flow metering is an important requirement.
