AdBlue level sensor for low NOx diesel trucks

A Gentech International product story
Edited by the Processingtalk editorial team Sep 25, 2007

A new fluid level sensor is making sure trucks keep on the road and avoid the high penalties associated with stringent Euro 4 / Euro 5 emission standards

Sensor manufacturer, Gentech, has introduced a sensor which monitors levels of AdBlue, and provides an output for designers to interface to the vehicles ECU.

AdBlue (32.5% urea solution) is used in the SCR system in diesel trucks where it reacts in the exhaust catalyser to greatly reduce NOx emissions.

Running without AdBlue would result in an engine exceeding the permitted emission levels so it is critical to operators that AdBlue levels are maintained in the reservoir.

The Gentech Custom Sensing Solutions Team worked closely with a leading manufacturer to understand what was needed and to develop a sensor that would monitor levels and allow integration options with the engine management system.

Using proven reed switch technology, the AdBlue sensor is built into a robust tube structure which retains the float assembly.

The Gentech Custom Solution Team is also able to adapt the size and fitting requirement of the sensor to meet the needs of individual engine or vehicle builders.

In addition to monitoring fluid level Gentech addressed a problem highlighted by vehicles operating in very cold conditions - freezing of AdBlue.

A heater element utilising the engine cooling system has been incorporated into the sensor assembly to help ensure AdBlue is always available, within the recommended guidelines.
