GDS and the Italian Government support Eastern European industry by investing heavily into Romanian site, a Low Cost Region and part of the Arad Free Trade Enterprise Zone

Global Display Solutions (GDS), market leader in the design and manufacture of industrial displays, has united with the Italian Government to invest over Euro 1million into its recently opened facility in Arad, Romania, called GDS Manufacturing Services SA This is part of the Italian government's new initiative to support companies, such as GDS, who are expanding into Eastern European countries

Government-owned Finest SpA is contributing 25% of the total investment to this latest venture, alongside the GDS financial contribution.

The main aim of this investment is to expand the Romanian site enabling GDS to migrate its production of industrial displays, which is currently carried out in Italy, to the new facility.

As Arad is a Low Cost Region (LCR), this will allow GDS to reduce its overheads and the overall manufacturing costs of its displays, developing a cost-effective and competitive operation that will benefit its customers in the long-term.

GDS has established the facility in Arad, Romania due to the economic benefits on offer and the proximity to Italy.

Arad Free Trade Enterprise Zone is one of six free trading zones established by the Romanian government and offers real opportunities for GDS to continue to grow its global business, with incentives such as tax and customs exemptions.

The Italian government is encouraging investment into countries such as Romania in a bid to help develop their industry to become as effective as more established LCRs like China.

In turn this will benefit European based companies as Romania is much more accessible than Far East destinations such as China.

The new investment will provide the infrastructure to yield a 1200m2 production facility in the existing converted factory, alongside 250m2 of offices in an adjacent building.

The Romanian site has been successful since it became operational in September 2004, it is currently used specifically for the production of subassemblies (electronic circuit boards).

The existing Romanian site comprises three assembly lines: a surface mount technology line, a pin in hole line and an automated line for manual assembly with wave solder.

However, following this new investment, the factory will also be equipped with an automatic PTH Department, a test centre, and a warehouse.

By the end of 2005 GDS Manufacturing Services SA plans to employ 60 people at the Romanian site, the expansion will be facilitated by this new investment.

Luca Bisognin, Sales and Marketing Manager at GDS, comments: "By investing in this site we will continue manufacturing high quality goods whilst driving down costs for the benefit of our customers.

GDS has continuous expansion plans which are mainly driven by the need to support locally our global accounts and reduce costs by using LCRs." GDS is a world-leading manufacturer of industrial display solutions for a number of industries worldwide including retail, advertising, entertainment, kiosk, banking, marine, process and transport.

GDS now manufactures in Italy, USA, Brazil, Romania and Taiwan and has offices in USA, UK, Brazil, Spain, France, Germany, Italy, Romania, Taiwan and Australia.
