New separation unit for animal rendering plant

A Gough Engineering product story

New processing facilities at an animal recycling plant has incorporated a scalping process designed by handling specialists Gough to separate solids from tallow destined for industrial applications

New processing facilities at the UK's largest independent animal by-product recycler, John Pointon and Sons, has incorporated a scalping process specifically designed by handling specialists Gough to separate solids from tallow destined for industrial applications.

The new rendering plant will receive segregated animal wastes that are classified as Category 1 and 2 material under recent European legislation.

This material is then processed in the new dedicated facility, reducing animal wastes using a high temperature method.

The tallow is extracted, cleaned and used as a fuel to raise steam for the rendering process.

Two Gough Vibraflow circular screen separators designed maximise the separation of tallow from solid matter 2mm and below, and taking up minimal factory space are currently being installed within the process.

Material smaller than the Vibroflow's screen aperture passes through the screen and discharges directly below under gravity for further processing, thus allowing for higher throughput than with a conventional screen separator.

Dual outboard motors, mounted at the machine perimeter, control the amplitude vibration, and thus the speed of oversize particles in transit across the screen to the oversize discharge outlet.

By mounting the motors outboard on the rim of the machine deck, access for maintenance procedures is greatly simplified.

It is a feature which influenced John Pointon's Technical Manager - Alistair Collins who has been impressed with Gough's equipment in the past and highly rates their low maintenance and high reliability.

"Our reason for our continued confidence in Gough equipment has been their British engineering, reliability and commitment to product development", explained Alistair Collins.
