Gurney Environmental announces the UK availability of the Bio2Bloc system that boosts the performance of aerobic wastewater retention basins, tanks and lagoons, manufactured by FBC Technologies

This innovative system, essentially a floating submerged aerated filter (SAF), is capable of enhancing both BOD removal and nitrification: the system is particularly useful in cold climates where year-round compliance with tight ammonia consents has become a struggle Whilst the system can, and is, being specified for new installations it is particularly suitable for enhancing the performance of existing plants, including most types of activated sludge system

For example Bio2Bloc modules can be installed in non-nitrifying activated sludge plants to convert them to fully nitrifying systems.

The BioBloc system has been in service since 1999 in municipal and industrial WWTPs.

The modular system is easily retrofitted and each BioBloc provides a rich and stable environment to bolster existing micro-organisms.

Unlike an RBC, the aerated media beds are in constant contact with the water and are completely aerated by a highly efficient aeration system.

Each BioBloc module is filled with thousands of pieces of bio-media where, during normal operation, a healthy biomass is formed by a supply of air and water produced by the fine bubble polyurethane membrane diffusers located on the bottom of each bio-chamber.

As with any fixed-film biological contactor, the units will tend to become overgrown with organisms after a period of time.

When this happens, the patented BioBloc has a separate coarse-bubble system, valved from the shore, to slough the media bed and clear the chamber for renewed growth.

Other than this periodic backflushing, the system requires no cleaning or maintenance.

There are no moving parts and all the controls are remotely sited.

BioBlocs are designed to be deployed individually or in series according to requirements.

They diffuse a high level of dissolved oxygen into surrounding wastewater through the media bed.

The units are built to specification and are easily installed using light weight lifting equipment, and floated into place.

The first UK installation of a BioBloc system will be completed later this month as part of a new Aero-Fac wastewater treatment plant currently under construction.

The system will operate during the winter months and is being installed to ensure compliance with ammonia consents during the period when nitrification performance would normally slow down.
