Medium pressure UV for sugar syrup
disinfection
To ensure sugar and fructose syrups used in soft drink manufacturing remain free from yeast and mould contamination, the Coca Cola Spanish plants have installed medium pressure UV disinfection systems
Cobega S.A., the Coca Cola Spanish concessionary, has installed cost effective medium pressure ultraviolet (UV) disinfection systems from Hanovia Limited at three of its factories The plants in Barcelona, St Quirze del Valles and Palma de Mallorca have each been fitted with a Hanovia PMS150G4 system, which can treat up to 60cubic metres per hour of sugar syrup and fructose syrup

British company Hanovia will supply Sasol Technology Ltd with four medium pressure UV disinfection systems for its South African production plant, to enable secondary effluent re-use
Microprocessor-driven 'Photon' control modules allow remote operation of the UV units and also ensure full traceability through their data-logging facility.
The UV systems were installed by the Hanovia Spanish agent, TFB-Flygt S.A.
UV disinfection technology was considered to be far more economically viable than traditional pasteurisation and was selected by Cobega SA after the company contacted other Hanovia reference sites across Europe and North Africa.
Hanovia was able to demonstrate significant life cycle cost savings for the medium pressure equipment compared with low pressure UV systems.
"We are very happy with the performance of the UV system," commented the manager of the Cobega plant in St Quirze del Valles.
"It has been operating exactly as expected since it was installed".
Medium pressure UV is highly effective at destroying virtually all micro-organisms, including bacteria, yeasts and moulds - recent independent tests have also shown it to kill Cryptosporidium, an organism resistant to chlorine disinfection.
It does not affect the pH or chemical composition of the product, ensuring the flavour is not affected.
Each UV system consists of a stainless steel treatment chamber containing one or more UV-emitting arc tubes.
Syrup passes through the chamber and the UV kills any micro-organisms present by disrupting their DNA.
Easy to install and with a small footprint, Hanovia UV systems can usually be connected to existing pipework with minimal disruption.
