Commenting on his appointment, Dietmar Harting said: 'Now that the Single European Market has been completed, Europe faces the challenge of ensuring that its standards are duly considered on international levels and thereby also find worldwide application.
Therefore, CENELEC must act as the strong, driving force of international electrotechnical standardisation.
To this end, it is necessary that CENELEC plays a stronger pioneering role in new technology areas, and that European standardisation organisations co-operate in an even closer, more co-ordinated manner, especially in areas of technology convergence.
A consistent, unified European standardisation system will strengthen Europe's position in the international competition of regions'.
