Headmaster, specialists in gas/liquid membrane technology, has launched its new compact GEM systems for verification and calibration of dissolved gas analysers

GEMs are powerful tools for QA in beverage production and packaging because they offer the speed and convenience of non-invasive tests using liquid: the medium which these analysers are actually designed for The comprehensive range covers single gases (O2, CO2, N2) as well as binary combinations (O2+CO2, O2+N2) - at dissolved levels close to the normal working ranges of analysers

Certain models have selectable DO output levels, allowing easy 2-point checking of analysers; all models can be set to output zero-DO liquid.

Only requiring connection to water, a gas (CO2 or N2), and air supplies, they provide constant 10 l/h flows of special reference liquids containing precise, displayed levels of dissolved gases.

GEMs operate at constant process pressure.

The Headmaster high-efficiency membrane assembly completely de-gasses a feed stream of filtered water and then saturates it with the process gas.

In the "binary" models, process gases are internally generated from the air and gas (CO2 or N2) supplies which are fed at a precisely-balanced pressure to steel capillary elements.

Dissolved gas levels, displayed in chosen units, are determined from known gas concentrations, pressure, and algorithms which correct solubility for process temperature.

Experience of 70 installations of previous Calibrator models has proved that these contactors maintain efficiency over 5 years - even in continuous duty.

New controls and new, battery-driven measurement technology in GEM Calibrators have delivered the practical benefits of dramatically reduced cost, size and weight, while retaining full accuracy and capacity.

Installation and operation are now greatly simplified, and maintenance is limited to 3-monthly replacement of 2 standard water filter elements.

GEMs are configured for use with all analyser types.

Portable and In-Line types are connected to the sample outlet and return fittings, allowing direct comparison between display and measurement.

For work with Package Analysers, an output of process gas is provided for purging sets of up to 6 of the Headmaster re-usable Sample Bottles before filling with the reference liquid under an exact equilibrium condition.

The bottles, containing known dissolved gas level and constant head space, are then pierced and sampled in the normal way.

The bottles are fully compatible with listed routines for liquid-phase calibration of package analysers.

Headmaster maintains that GEM-based methods have significant advantages over existing "reference can" schemes, since processing time is only 7 minutes per sample bottle and - importantly - test results are obtained immediately.
