Emergency shut down (ESD) systems from HIMA are to be used in the Porvoo refinery in Finland in a new production line for sulphur-free diesel, to ensure reliable operation of the plant.

This project is a joint undertaking between HIMA and Metso Automation, among others.

Metso is the leading Finnish supplier of automation and control technology expertise, and they are implementing the automation systems on behalf of the operator, Fortum Oil.

The delivery from HIMA includes eight H51q-HRS ESD systems for the diesel plant, plus one H51q-HRS ESD system for the affiliated hydrogen system, with full technical support during the project.

One of the decisive factors for the award of this contract was the ease of integration into the Metso control system, MetsoDNA.

The nine ESD systems can be used in accordance with IEC 61508 and IEC 61511 up to SIL 3 and will process approximately 3000 I/O from the control point of view.

The coupling between the control system MetsoDNA and the HIMA H51q systems uses an Ethernet connection.

The Finnish Fortum Oil Corporation, the second largest oil refining company in Scandinavia, operates one of the most modern refineries in Europe at the Porvoo site, close to Helsinki.

The new production line, which is currently under construction, will produce sulphur-free, environment-friendly fuels, in particular diesel.

The plant, with an annual capacity of approximately 1 million tons, will be on stream at the end of 2006.
