Migration services help upgrade paper mill
Honeywell has introduced a suite of migration services designed to help paper mills upgrade their Quality Control Systems to the latest measurement and control technologies in a cost-effective manner
The services allow mills to keep existing scanners, sensors and cross-direction (CD) actuators in place while upgrading signal processing hardware, application software and server technology.
"Older QCS systems are becoming more difficult and costly to support, so Honeywell designed a broad range of services as step-by-step upgrades of the most critical components," said Andrew Hird, global leader for the Honeywell Process Solutions pulp and paper business.
"By effectively focusing on the brains of the QCS, our migration and upgrade services offer a fast, reduced-risk, higher-return way for mills to take advantage of the latest QCS innovations in a cost-effective manner".
The migration services include precision measurement, CD actuator and scanner and multivariable control upgrades.
These services enhance system reliability and product quality and reduce waste by improving profile measurement response and resolution for better CD alignment, edge measurement and CD control.
The services result in reduced roll condition losses, faster break recovery, fewer production losses and lowered lifecycle costs.
In addition, the services improve system flexibility by allowing mills to add new sensors and applications such as porosity measurement, FotoForm camera-based formation sensors and the ExPress Moisture sensors and scanners.
Other applications such as Quality OptiMiser for historical quality analysis can also be added.
Additionally, the existing QCS can be upgraded to include Performance CDMultivariable Control.
This unique application coordinates multiple actuators to optimise multiple sheet properties, which delivers higher paper quality, maximises production efficiency and saves energy and resources.
By better coordinating the control of existing CD actuators, a Honeywell beta customer is controlling the weight, moisture and caliper to 0.5 percent of process across a 150gram weight range.
The customer also has significantly reduced energy costs and recovery time for grade changes, breaks and start-ups.
This was all possible without changing existing scanners, sensors or CD actuators.
