How to save on welding purge gases

Purging prior to welding can consume large amounts of expensive gas: the trick is to confine the gas where it is needed. HFT offers some tips on how to save waste of welding purge gases

Purging prior to welding can consume large amounts of expensive gas: the trick is to confine the gas where it is needed, so consider: 1) Efficiency of sealing between the gas barrier and the metal: Using paper, cardboard, timber or even metal profiles and sticky tape is often ineffective

The sharp and non-uniform barrier geometry can give rise to turbulence and thence to poor gas coverage.

Leaks are commonplace.

Outgassing from grease and even from the barrier material itself can cause problems.

2) Use of a specialised oxygen monitor: Many operators guess at the time needed to purge to an acceptable gas quality.

Inevitably overestimation is the result and this is wasteful on gas.

Guessing does not take account of any leaks which might be present.

Buy a dedicated monitor.

3) Keep the volume to be purged as small as practical: The bigger the volume to be purged the longer it takes to reach satisfactory gas quality.

Furthermore, large volumes often encourage the use of higher flow rates that can cause turbulence and thus result in a slower purge and more gas consumption.

4) Ease and speed of insertion and removal of the barriers: Considerable time can be lost inserting and removing temporary seals and disposing of the residual products.

Huntingdon Fusion Techniques worked recently with companies involved in welding stainless steel pipework and supplied its unique ArgweldQuick Purge systems and weld purge monitors.

Gas consumption dropped by 90%, saving over GBP2500 per month.

These systems also offer much faster set-up and overall purge times can be reduced by up to 83% .
