An introduction to the subject of alarm management, and an overview of some techniques for improving alarm system performance, will be presented by Neil Brown of Real Time Engineering

This lecture on 12 April is entitled: "Improved Alarm Performance on Large Systems" Presented by Neil Brown of Real Time Engineering, the lecture covers the subject of alarm management, and provides an overview of some techniques for improving alarm system performance

With large installations commonly having 5,000 to 15,000 individual alarms, reviewing them individually would clearly be expensive in money, time and resources.

Furthermore, it would inevitably result in inconsistencies between similar alarms reviewed at different times and/or by different people.

This paper outlines some effective techniques for rationalising and improving the performance of systems with large numbers of alarms.

The paper also presents a case study, based on an alarm rationalisation and performance improvement exercise carried out on an onshore gas processing plant.
